This Week's SATURDAY SHORTS: A mixture of Comedy, Horror, and a few surprises!

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Muldoon here with this week's picks. In case you're new to SATURDAY SHORTS, each week I have the lucky privilege of showcasing a handful of fun films created and submitted by Ain't It Cool Readers. I'll be honest with you all, back when I started this I thought it would last for a few months, but I clearly underestimated the amount of filmmakers in the audience and I'm happy as hell to see so many people out there making things. If by chance you've made something, submitted it to SS, and have not seen it up - don't sweat it, keep making more things. Keep doing what you do and making your own rules. At any rate, today I've got five shorts that I think you folks will get a kick out of, five shorts I think are worth your time. So without further delay, let's hops into this week's SATURDAY SHORTS.

Go grab yourself some popcorn, lock your kids in a closet, kill the lights, relax and check out this little weekly film fest we've got ourselves here:

THROUGH THE NIGHT

TRT: 10:33

We have writer/director Lee Cronin to kick things off with his creepy film that will linger with you well after the credits roll. "Every night around the world couples fall asleep side by side, trusting they know what lies beside them..."

SPOILER

TRT: 17:18

Just when I thought "Mike/Muldoon, you've had enough zombie films for the year" BAM! something like Daniel Thron's short fall right in my lap and slap in the face. I might be alone here, but zombie films have become ubiquitous and done to death. That's where folks like Thron come into play, they somehow manage to "reanimate" the zombie genre and create something that is truly interesting. SPOILER is that film, the one that delivers quality over cheap thrills. I'm a fan. "The zombie apocalypse happened -- and we won.  But though society has recovered, the threat of infection is always there -- and Los Angeles Coroner Tommy Rossman is the man they call when things go wrong."

EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON

TRT: 14:33

Up next we have a film from Florian Schott, a fourteen minute short all done in a single take. While the single take thing isn't new (I'm looking at you SILENT HOUSE and slightly ROPE as well) it is rare that it's done well. That's what Schott's got for us, a comedy shot in a single take that's actually damn good. If you like what you see, hit up the film's Facebook page or if you're curious, check out the Facebook page for Schott's new feature.

BLINDSIDED

TRT: 2:10

Up next is a super quick bit, but holy hell am I impressed with the animation. Christopher Bendt is up to some damn fine work over at The Art Institue of Seattle and I really feel we're seeing something that's later going to be on a DVD extra years from now... In other words: I think we'll be seeing Bendt helm some larger projects (if he maintains this level of cleanliness).

STAR WARS SPEED DATING

TRT: 5:06

And to close out this weekend's picks we have the gang at Stan Lee's World Of Heroes and Tom Grey. It's drastically different from the first film we showed today, but it's a hell of a fun way to say "adios." Tom Grey and co. hit the nail on the head with their funny speed dating meets the Star War universe video. I laughed and think you will too. Keep 'em coming, Tom!

Bam! The the immortal words of a very famous pig, "that's all folks." I'll see you ladies and gents next week with another round of fun films. In the meantime, click any of the links below to be transported to a magical world of past SATURDAY SHORTS:

If you have a short and think it belongs here or are on the fence about whether to send it in, please do send it in - I'd love to see what you've put together. I've already seen hundreds of fresh new filmmakers' shorts and like any good addict, I need more!

Shoot me an email at "Mike@aintitcool.com"

In the subject line include:

“SHORTS” + “Your film’s name” + “The film’s genre”

Then, in the body of the email, please include a synopsis of the film and any contact information you might think I need or would want published. The more info you send my way, the more info there is to put with your short.

Please don’t feel the need to submit multiple times.

Remember, the filmmakers might still be in the audience, so feel free to share your thoughts in Talkbacks below. (JUST DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE). I picked them, so you know I think highly of all of these, but how about you fine folks? How'd you like 'em?

BY THE WAY: If you've had a short featured here, that means that I personally am a fan of your work, so feel free to shoot me any kind of news on new projects/films/whatever. I can't say I'll be able to help or in what capactiy, but I'm interested in your work and am always down to see more! (Keep making cool stuff, everyone!)

- Mike McCutchen
