The central character is Kay Harker who, on returning from boarding school, finds himself mixed up in a battle to possess a magical box, which allows the owner to go small (shrink) and go swift (fly), experience magical wonders contained within the box and go into the past.BOX is actually the second book chronicling adventures of a character introduced in Masefield's 1927 progenitor THE MIDNIGHT FOLK (HERE). In a vaguely related side note, Masefield conjured the immortal quotation ""All I ask is a tall ship, and a star to steer her by" in his poem SEA-FEVER - cited one or twice in STAR TREK, and many times else where. BOX OF DELIGHTS was turned into a BBC miniseries back in 1984, whose first episode looked something like this:
