Hats off to Stephen Totilo for doing a really bang-up job of exploring the relationship between Miyazaki's Ghibli Studios and Walt Disney, the chosen distributor of Miyazaki's films in the West.

Basically, it looks like it's going to be a while before we silly round eyes get a chance to see Miyazaki's latest work, despite the fact that it's a stupendous success in Japan. Once burned by MONONOKE, Disney isn't willing to try again. This is why I can see a dubbed print of LAPUTA CASTLE IN THE SKY on the festival circuit, but you can't go see it at a local arthouse, even. This is why we're never going to see NAUSICAA released right in this country or why we won't be given PORCO ROSSO or the new film, SPIRITED AWAY. Disney is just not willing to try again.

Please... I wrote a severe headline to get your attention. David Jessen... Michael Johnson... you guys have the power to get it right the second time. Learn from how you released MONONOKE and try again. Please... help these films find an audience that is hungry for them. Don't give in to the fear that so often fuels decision in this town. Disney can sell animation better than anyone.
