Just How Crazy Is Spike Jonze'!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

If there's any film I'm dying to see right now, it's Spike Jonze's second feature, ADAPTATION. Written by Charlie Kaufman, it promises to be another genre-bending head trip. I reviewed the script last year, and it's one of the best things I've read in my time at AICN. There's a scene I've heard about in the last few days, though, that wasn't in the script I read, and I'm dying to see if this rumor pans out. If so, Jonze is even crazier than I thought.

Jed, one of our TalkBackers, dropped me an IM the other day to point me towards a Cusack fan site (John and Joan, evidently) that had details on the alleged scene, and it makes sense. Catherine Keener and John Cusack are definitely listed as being in ADAPTATION, and it seems that they're playing themselves on the 7 1/2 floor set from BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, a set that's been reproduced completely with Spike Jonze playing himself in a conversation with Charlie Kaufman (Nicolas Cage), who is trying to convince Spike to make his next script, an adaptation of THE ORCHID THIEF, the script that eventually became ADAPTATION.

Not since BACK TO THE FUTURE 2 have we seen a filmmaker try to fold one film around another like this, and you have to credit both Jonze and Kaufman for the sheer madness of the concepts they're playing with. Let's hope it turns out to be true.

"Moriarty" out.
