Roger Avary's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' THE RULES OF ATTRACTION is Moving Forward!!!!

Hey folks, Harry here... Just a day or two ago I was talking to Roger Avary getting an update on where things are for THE RULES OF ATTRACTION, a film that has a script that I just have fallen slap-happy in love with. Roger has had the misfortune for the last several years of having written multiple really wonderful and great scripts that came within a hair of being produced before the sun bled shit from the sky and mired his project in a bog of seemingly eternal stench never to get off the ground. Avary has been determined to not see this happen with THE RULES OF ATTRACTION.

His biggest problem to date is finding the people that embody the characters in Bret Easton Ellis' insanely pitch black heartless evil book, and then have those people agree to play characters that completely slap everything that those actors and actresses have been portrayed as being in film thus far. This is the film for when the beautiful people are skinned alive and shown for being the shallow hateful spiteful asses that they can be. This is a wickedly evil script based on a wickedly evil book that a wickedly evil director named Roger Avary hopes to turn into a wickedly evil film.

Roger found his Sean Bateman quite early in James Van Der Beek. Yes, Sean Bateman is Patrick Bateman's younger brother... and yes, Patrick Bateman is in the film... in a bit of a cameo that will delight all you insane people that actually loved that piece of one-note shit called AMERICAN PSYCHO. Van Der Beek will be playing the complete metaphysical opposite of the character he plays on DAWSON'S CREEK, and it is my belief that what Avary is doing by casting him... is to twist everything that hunky prime-time dudes and beautiful gals on the WB stand for and skull fuck it. If you've read THE RULES OF ATTRACTION, imagining someone as purely domesticated as the doe-eyed Van Der Beek in the role of Sean Bateman is... well, wickedly evil.

Meanwhile, finding his Lauren has been immensely tough, till he finally got Shannyn Sossamon (A KNIGHT'S TALE) to play the character. Now, take what Shannyn embodied in A KNIGHT'S TALE... a strong willed virginal lady in waiting... Now Avary is going to twist Shannyn into becoming a venereal disease phobic college girl that loves to give head and take it up the ass, but has decided to finally give her pussy to someone... and is exactly that weird about it... THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL COLLEGE FLICK. And Shannyn Sossamon will be responsible for a spit take that you will do in the theater approximately 3 minutes into the film... perhaps 2 minutes, depending on pacing.

When I last talked to Avary, he was set to meet with Shannyn Sossamon, but apparently she has been cast according to Variety.Com.

This is fantastic, because this means he now has his greenlight from Lion's Gate which means that the production will move forward AUGUST 13th on the most twistedly evil teen flick around. I can't wait to see Piotro Pinky's 100 yard eastern European dwarvish stare upon leaving the theater that this film plays in.

I'll probably talk with Avary later next week to get an update on how the casting is progressing, but this is, based upon Avary's KILLING ZOE and his script... a helluva exciting intelligent dark project to be looking for on the horizon...
