An Early Look At THE 51st STATE with Robert Carlyle and Sam 'The man' Jackson

Hey folks, Harry here... Sam Jackson seems to be having a hellaciously busy time at the testing houses around the country... His film with Ben Affleck was just tested, and now his flick with Robert Carlyle... What next, EPISODE II? Dream on... 51ST STATE sounds like a winner (hey, it has Sam Jackson and Robert Carlyle... what the hell you expect?) Here ya go...

Hi Harry

I managed to see a preview of the new Brit film The 51st State with Samuel L Jackson and Robert Carlyle and thought you might be interested.

Before they showed the film they explained that it wasn't complete but was only lacking music and some FX. The music they used was supposed to be temporary but I suspect the majority of it will stay as its the usual Brit film mix of pop music and dance. However, the picture quality needs some improving.

First the plot and I won't try and give anything away. Sam the man has developed a new drug far more powerful than cocaine and after reneging on his deal to sell the drug to the lizard (meatloaf) he goes to liverpool to sell the drug to and English hood. However, The lizard sends an assasin after him, dakota (Emily Mortimer), who comes from Liverpool. Robert Carlyle meets Sam the man at the airport and thats where things start to go wrong.

So what was good

The plot is pretty fast paced with lots of humour in there. Also there are a few gross out moments, particularly the ending, which will people will either buy or not buy. Sam wears a kilt throughout his whole time in England, and some jokes centre round this and whats under it, but not too much. In essence this is a buddy movie between Carlyle and Sam The Man and they work real well. The action is pretty good with a great car chase scene. Sam does his usual Sam performance and Carlyle is good as ever. Unlike a lot of action films the humour seemed well placed and not forced into the script by a script writer who doesn't know what his doing.

And the Bad.

Ryhs Ifans drug dealer was annoying at times, although some of the audience loved him. Also the way the lizard always refers to himself in the third person was very grating.

However, I really enjoyed the film. As did most people there. Some of the jokes may not translate well to an american audience but I think this could be a hit. This isn't Lock Stock & Smoking Barrels, but it doesn't try to be. It's no classic but is a hell of a lot better than what I have had to endure as summer blockbusters so far this year
