Que Patza, CineLocos del Mundo...
Father Geek here this Tuesday with another report from Coffin Joe Jr. for our regular Latin-AICN column, buuuuuut primera, ese contribucion de nuevo critico...
Hello Harry Greetings from Maracaibo, Venezuela, i've veen reading your site for 3 years hoping i could sent you a scoop, when finally there is a sneak preview in my town, the biggest sequel of the summer: JURASSIC PARK 3.
The good news are that is better than The Lost World, there is no Jeff Goldblum, it has an actual plot, its pretty thrilling, and the kid is NOT annoying.
The bad news: Its Pg-13, which means is practically bloodless, but makes up for it with a great tension atmosphere, Tea Leoni and Bill Macy characters were pretty underwritten, i can believe Payne and Taylor penned the script, Leoni in fact had a totally thankless role, Macy's role is a bit better, and he does all he can with the part, and there was a plot development near the end that it shouldn't have been that way, you will see when you see the movie, *spoilers* It Concerns the death of a character *end spoilers*.
The plot is about a couple of divorcees played by Leoni and Macy that are looking for the song, in the island site B, they recruit Hammond to be their guide by giving him a check, so he could keep his research going, pretty simple but it keeps the motion going, the first important action sequence is a pg-13 plane crash, that is thrilling enough, and the centerpiece of the movie is the encounter with the pterodactiles (sp?), it borrows from the previous movies, but keeps the continuity, like the other 2 it starts with a sequence that it seems it won't have nothing to do with the movie, and we found out another important tidbit of the Raptors, they comunicate through sound.
Its a terrific summer flick, better than the dissapoiting IMHo Mummy Returns, well worth your bucks, and another thing, it leaves open for another sequel.
Well i hope this serves you for something, and maybe you should come some day to here, we have a small film industry, but we've been turning out some pretty interesting films lately, and lots of shorts.
Just call me Critico.
Father Geek back to say hasta luego y here's Coffin Joe Jr...
Hey everybody, Coffin Joe Jr. is here for yet another spooky edition of Latin-AICN.
Did you guys see that Spanish director Alex de la Iglesia is out of the "Fu Manchu" project? How uncool is that? Apparently it has something to do with the budget, Alex wasn´t happy with what they had, so instead of making a crappy flick, he bailed. Bummer. Let´s wait and see what he´s going to do next.
Here´s this week´s news:
US
-There´s a review of "Mimic 2" at Fangoria´s website. The direct-to-video sequel to Guillermo del Toro´s giant bug flick, "Mimic 2" stars Brazilian actor Bruno Campos ("Jesse"), Will Estes, Alix Koromzay and Jon Polito. DP turned director Jean de Segonzac is the helmer, with a script by Joel Soisson, who writes a lot of stuff for Dimension ("Dracula 2000", "Highlander: Endgame", etc). Just jump to: Right Here, Right Now.
-"Bloodlust: Legend of the Chupacabra", is a new genre flick being written by Ravel Centeno-Rodriguez ("The Thirteenth Floor") for Joe Roth´s Revolution Studios. The plot deals with animals mysteriously dying in Puerto Rico and the fear that spreads across the country because of these deaths, attributed to the legendary creature.
(COFFIN JOE JR. NOTE: They can even get the ads saying: "From the producers of the contemporary classics "The Animal" and "Tomcats" comes a touching story about a misunderstood beast in a hot Latin country. Coming soon to a theater near you.")
-Shooting on the new Jennifer Lopez flick, called "Enough" and directed by veteran helmer Michael Apted, has wrapped. In the movie, an abused woman (Lopez) discovers that her husband (Campbell) isn't whom she thought he was. She and her daughter try to escape, but he pursues them relentlessly. Fearing for the safety of her daughter, she decides that there´s only one option left: killing the bastard.
(COFFIN JOE JR. NOTE: Forget Jennifer Lopez, get Charles Bronson, put him in a dress and let the bullets fly baby!)
-Check out the trailer to Alejandro Amenábar´s "The Others", starring Nicole Kidman, at this location: Just Click Here Now and prepare to have your ass kicked.
PERU
-The movie"El Bien Esquivo", directed by Augusto Tamayo San Román, and starring Diego Bertie, Jimena Lindo, Orlando Sacha, Paul Vega and Salvador del Solar, opens July 12th in Peru. "El Bien Esquivo" is a costume drama, about a half breed Spanish-Indian soldier who returns to Peru from Europe in 1618 to find a document that can prove he is not illegitimate. Filming took place mainly in Lima, Peru.
INTERNET
-Here´s an update on the Notodofilmfest, which we previously reported a few weeks ago:
"La leyenda de los siete negros de oro" awarded 3-million peseta Jury Prize for the Best Film
NOTODOFILMFEST.COM PRIZES FOR THE BEST INTERNET FILMS
Notodofilmfest.com, the First International Internet Compressed Film Festival, has ended after almost three months of great small-format films - 449 shorts in all - and clever storylines created exclusively for the Web. Plus.es and notodo.com said good-bye to participants on the evening of 12 July, personally greeting winners and honouring the select group of new moviemakers who have reinvented cinema using Internet. The awards granted in this Festival, which made its debut on the Web last 14 April, totalled 8.5 million pesetas (US$ 43,800), divided among several categories.
It was Compressed Films' stellar night: movie-making at its purest, surprises, two very special masters of ceremony - the Gomaespuma duo, leaders in Spanish radio audience - and many great directors. The gala was held in honour of these new directors and their imagination, as confirmed by the members of the jury - Alex de la Iglesia, Terry Gilliam, Santiago Segura, Fernando León, Guillermo del Toro and Eliseo Subiela, Juanma Bajo Ulloa, Sergio Cabrera, Julio Medem and Javier Fesser. The last four jury members attended the ceremony.
More than one million shorts downloaded
The "notodofilmfest" was a total success in participation. During the last few months, the joint endeavour by notodo.com and plus.es to discover new film talents has travelled around the world. Proof of this are the shorts from 17 countries, including Denmark, El Salvador and the United States, presented in the Festival. Exactly 449 caught the interest of Web surfers from the very beginning. By means of a simple downloading process, the films were projected in the Festival's website. One million shorts downloaded is the best evidence of the success of the Festival's first edition.
