Hey folks, Harry here.... BULLY is a film that illicits reactions from all accounts. It is... some say, morally repugnant and worthy of a mountain of flames to purify our world.... and others say it is the surest indication that we have a free form of cinema about... and others say it ain't no big deal at all.... Unfortunately, most of these people write small sentences with nothing to back up their statement, therefore.... teasing and making me the viewer curious. However, the one fella that did write it all down.... well he was pissed, here's what he has to say about it all....
BULLY
Someone please stop Larry Clark from making more films. I saw his latest attempt BULLY, and I have to say that as much of a trumpeter of freedom of speech as I am, not only is this the perfect movie for government sensors to come down on hard as a representation of gratuitous sex in entertainment, but I would support such an ass-kicking of this film. Porn is great. Kid's movies are great. However, porno kids movies... not so great.
I loved KIDS. It disturbed me long after I left the theater, with spot-on dialogue and naturalism and an eerieness that I usually only feel in horror films. And the sexuality was an important part of the film, a vehicle for the deadly HIV virus threatening to pass on from young child to even younger child. But this new "film" is junk. It's pedophelia on celluloid. Not to mention the fact that Bijou Phillips really should be put down as an actor. If kid sex had anything to do with the plot of the film (as in the plot-lite KIDS), I guess it could be supported, but alas it does not. The material about a high school murder could have been really interesting, but unfortunately even teen girl crotch shots couldn't keep my attention through this meandering crap. In its attempt at realism, you end up feeling like you just spent an afternoon at the mall babysitting a bunch of self-important, moronic, uninteresting teenagers. In the high school murder genre, this movie begs to be half as compelling and idiosynchratic as the similar but superior RIVER'S EDGE.
Larry Clark is a scumbag who has the art establishment so far up his ass that he thinks he can make a worthless kiddie porn film (what's up with the young gay dancing scene other than Clark getting his rocks off?) and believe wholeheartedly that its art. I can already see the "art lovers" drooling over this film out of a fear that if one disparages the downsized "indie" Larry Clark (that being one step away from "studio" Larry Clark, who failed with the more mainstream star-driven film ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE), one is out of touch with the under-establishment. Poor suckers. Please, Larry, just get your child porn on the net without pushing it in our faces. Whatever talent you had is obviously long gone.
Yours truly,
Chachie
