Oh joy, Harry here... I'm so happy to hear that TOMB RAIDER 2 is coming because, given all the fun the producers had with Simon West, I just know he won't be back... and if they hire a director that can actually... well direct.... and a cinematographer that can shoot something and make it look GOOD... And action choreographers without a stigmatism... well then, TOMB RAIDER 2 could be fun... Really. I know I hated the first one, but in starting over... filming a new one... well they actually have a chance to make a FAR BETTER sequel than the original was. BUT start with a Director... don't even begin on the script yet. GET a wonderful director first... let him have carte blanche... and make it rule. The one thing great about this TOMB RAIDER has been the marketing... the selling of the film. Marketing isn't about honesty in film, it is about getting butts in seats, and that is sure as hell what they did this time out. Next time, let's hope they have something to sell us...
I'm not sure if this is NEW news, but what the heck. Entertainment Tonight had a feature this evening (6/22/01) about how the "marketing geniuses" at Paramount had made Tomb Raider into a guaranteed box office success. This was done, according to the piece, but taking out lots of ads all over the place. What a revolutionary marketing technique! Anyways, it came out in an intervew sound bite from a higher-up at Paramount whose name escapes me that "Since this one has done so well... You'll be seeing Lara Croft again." Yeah, I know. I was sorry to hear it, too.
