Hey folks, Harry here... We haven't seen much about this film online thus far, but ComingSoon.Net just recently put a link up to the trailer... and I love the trailer for this film. And Amenabar is a fantastic director... So much so that Cameron Crowe is remaking Amenabar's OPEN YOUR EYES with Tom Cruise (due out later this year as well). Kind of strange really, Tom in a remake of an Amenabar film, Nicole in an original Amenabar film... Odd. But no matter, I'm here for this flick, it has me. And this review from The Quick Brown Fox sounds like the film delivers, but still needs a tad of work... There's plenty of time to nail this one though...
Hey all, this is The Quick Brown Fox who wrote to you a while back with your first review of Charlie's Angels. Now I've had the opportunity to see a movie called The Others, directed by Alejandro Amenabar, who also directed Open Your Eyes, which, as I understand it, was quite good.
The Others, while not a great movie, is a good one with some suspenseful moments, great atmosphere and a surprise ending that I did not see coming. I have a feeling that with some reworking, it could be a great movie.
Basically, it's a ghost story. Nicole Kidman is the mother of two children who are allergic to light. She hires three servants to take care of the house and needless to say, things start getting a little spooky. Doors open and close by themselves. Sounds of children crying are heard. Spookiest of all, the children are sighting several "intruders" in the house, including a witch-like old lady.
Comparisons to The Sixth Sense are inevitable. Undoubtedly, The Others was written with the 1999 hit in mind. I wasn't crazy about that movie, but I liked it. I think, at least at this point, The Others is about as good as The Sixth Sense, but it could be so much more. While Sixth Sense had a great surprise, but really no story, The Others has a strong story and a great surprise ending, but the surprise seems more written to be a surprise instead of organically coming out of the story.
As it stands, however, The Others has many edge-of-your seat moments and an equal number of screams. The movie releases in the US on August 10, so they have two months to find a way to set-up for the ending and possibly have a great movie instead of a good one. Here's hoping...
