I have recently received two positive reviews for DEEP IMPACT amongst all the hatred for the film. So here is the better written one...
OK, this is Mr. Joshua, the great unprinted one. I'm growing tired of all these horrible "Deep Impact" reviews I've seen posted from bitter sci-fi geeks (no offense, of course, intended). I've seen a nearly-finished version of the film and actually found it quite involving. I mean, it ain't gonna win no Oscars and likely won't be as big a hit as "Armageddon," but it certainly isn't as bad as anybody has made it out to be on this website.
I won't go into plot details, as those have already been described ad nauseum in former posts, but I will go on to say that the cast, particularly Robert Duvall and Morgan Freeman, is wonderful, and only the Elijah Wood-storyline rings stupid at times. As in any big-budget action flick like this, be it "Independence Day" or "Men in Black," there is going to be a certain amount of over-the-top stuff, and scenes that don't exactly add up in real life. But as escapist entertainment, "Deep Impact" truly delivers, with the most eye-popping effects I've seen in awhile, including "Titanic" (I still think the boat looked fake in some scenes, particular when computer-generated people were walking on it). The script, too, isn't as bad as I thought it would be, with not as nearly as many cheesy lines as "ID4" or, god forbid, "Lost in Space."
Mr. Joshua.
