Right now, Grande Rojo is... well... to be honest, I'm not sure where he is at this point. I hope he's on his way to France. He was having all sorts of fun with the airlines earlier today when he called me after landing in Dallas for the second time. We talked a little about his biggest hopes about Cannes. I know he's incredibly excited about all the great time he's spending on LORD OF THE RINGS, but that was the furthest thing from his mind as we spoke. He kept bringing it back to the same subject he's been spastic about for the last four or five days:
The possibility of a secret Quentin Tarantino screening, in particular, his western based on Elmore Leonard's 40 LASHES LESS ONE.
He's like Jim Garrison at this point. He's drunk on the idea. He sees conspiracy in everything. And he makes a damn good case for it, too. I'm surprised he hadn't upgraded his original prediction to an even 50/50 by the time he left. He definitely would have been excited by the brief note I got this afternoon...

This according to the International Herald Tribune:
"The much hyped MOULIN ROUGE starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor opened the Cannes film festival on Wednesday, with scheduled festivities that included a late-night bash in the yacht-crammed harbor. The twelve day event is both a showcase for hundreds of films and a market where movie makers and distributers do business. John Malkovich, Billy Bob Thornton, Cameron Diaz and Emmanuelle Beart will be there. On the director's side, Sean Penn will be promoting his film THE PLEDGE and Quentin Tarantino and David Lynch are booked."
That's right, according to the reputable IHT, QT is booked.

One of the things Harry was doing over the last few days was calling people around Quentin, people who might know something about something if there was, in fact, something to know. One of the people he said he spoke with was Roger Avery, who gave him nothing. Roger was like a stone wall, unmoving, without a single bit o' info.
So what do you think this means?

I was surfing over at Roger Avary's site today, and under his filmakers journal (updated by Avary himself) he wrote this for an update:"
39 is this weeks lucky number. Cannes you dig it?
"Since Avary is a good friend of Tarantino, plus the secret movie at Cannes is rumored to be FORTY LASHES LESS ONE or something to that effect, I figured this could be a serious clue. If anyone knew that Quentin had created a secret movie based on an Elmore Leonard novel it would definitely be Roger Avary. Hopefully this helps you guys...

All I know is, I wish I was going to be there to see Harry's face when they announce what the secret screening is. If it's FORTY LASHES, he'll probably mess himself. If it's not, I expect him to start randomly striking the people around him. Either way, it'll be interesting...
