EURO AICN - CANNES DAY 1

Hello, hello folks... Edgard here... as I am writing these lines (unfortunately from Paris, not Cannes), Cannes is now discovering the official screening of MOULIN ROUGE... the opening ceremony just ended 30 minutes ago (with a brief appearence from Francis "I'm glad to be in Cannes" Coppola; and the official "I declare the Cannes festival open" by Ewan Mc Gregor - in French - and Nicole Kidman - in English). Nothing really exciting, quite boring actually... But our spies are already around.

Let's start with Yarglaaa who confirms that AMELIE IN MONTMARTRE will not be shown in Cannes (but the team behind the film will be present to sell it on the Film Market)...

Just a word from France to say that "Amelie Poulain" won't be screened in public at Cannes. JP Jeunet thinks that he can't have all the technical constraints (digital sound, etc...) he wants. The whole team will be there though. "Amelie" could have been part of the Cannes selection but Jeunet didn't agree to let the movie open in september, it's a "spring movie" as he says. The outdoor screening will happen but the movie is still unknown, a surprise movie says the official statement... (who knows, maybe that Tarantino secret movie ;)...)

And now some links to the French Premiere website to keep track of the film presented today...

And "la pièce de résistance" with Grozilla's first day of adventures in Cannes... it seems he didn't enjoy much MOULIN ROUGE, but VISITOR Q sounds very very weird... heeeeeeeeeere's GROZILLA !!!

GROZILLA Stomping on Cannes - Day 1

Here I am again on the Croisette. Eleven days in the world greatest all-you-can-eat made for films. Like each year, so much promises, so much I desperately want to see (anyone got invitations for the two del toro's Espinazo del Diablo screening on th 11th ?), so much parties (Screw the Lord of Rings hypa-fiesta, I've already got my ticket to be on extravaganza Hong Kong party on the same time...)..

My Cannes opener hasn't been Moulin Rouge but Visitor Q , one of the latest films from Takashi Miike, one of the most interesting guy from Japan these days. Visitor Q was screened on film market. First day, first shock : this is the most insane film I've seen this year so far. Gross, rude but funny Visitor Q shoot down the family values : Father is looking for sex with whores, Son is bullied by school thugs but molests Mother who revenges from his cheating husband by bonking men who like to see and touch her scars and wounds. And that's just a start. Mix François Ozon's Sitcom and Pasolini's Theorem, get that by ten and here's an idea of what's this film is. Just for the "fun" of it, here's one of the film climax : Mother learns she's got breast milk. She's begin to squirt her nipples and wet the kitchen floor with milk, during this time, father is having sex with a dead whore, but the rigor mortis of the corpse grabs his penis ! Sick, sick sick.

Just as sick as Moulin Rouge is dull ! I thought Luhrman's Romeo + Juliette was a piece of crap, kind of Village people video shot by a clone of Alan Parker. Moulin rouge is worse. This is not a film, but a juke-box. Imagine the French cabaret as a Club 54 on speedball. Luhrman just use the same tricks as Alain Resnais's On connaît la chanson (using words from popular songs for dialogs) but with the camp culture. Elton John's Your song or Lamb's Gorecki or Madonna's Like a virgin will never be able to give some sensation of acting when just spoken. These are songs, not scripts. And when the music plays on, it just mixes on some awful blur anthems from now and then : the can-can uses parts of Marilyn's Diamonds are the girls best friends, Lady marmelade's Voulez-vous couches avec moi ce soir, Nirvana's Smell like teen spirit, that among others. Those cut-up pieces are a true nightmare. As is the editing of this film : no shot longer longer than a few seconds. You who thought Michael Bay was the Anti-christ of movies, Beware, Baz Lurhmann is his prophet ! Moulin Rouge has no flesh just skin. Ok it Nicole Kidman's one. But if she wasn't in this film, anybody here would have left the theater way before the end of this headachemaker. Moulin rouge sucks !

That's it for now. I'm starving and I need to check the room I'm renting here. But just to let you know what kind of dilemma Cannes is : for the first screening of tomrrow at 8 A.M I have to chose between Kore-eda's Distance (I loved his previous films), Santiago Segura's Torrente 2, Sadochistic & masochistic, a documentary from Hideo"Ring"Nakata about some Pink films (great Japanese erotic films from the 70's) directors,Buddy Giovinazzo's The unscarred and Bill Paxton's first directing effort, Frailty. That just for the early hours of the second day in Cannes. God I love to be here !
