Hey folks, Harry here... Peter Chelsom is being knocked around pretty bad after TOWN AND COUNTRY's non-performance and completely baffling to me critical lashing ta boot... However, as I stated in regards to the terrible SERENDIPTY trailer.... This film seems to be Chelsom's instant turnaround and dust off his pant legs and say, "Whatcha talking bout? I rule" At least that's my hope. Below you'll find a test screening review that the writer in question saw back in January, but just never got around to writing up.... Hey, I know that feeling. You should realize that there have probably been some fairly substantial changes made to the film in the past 5 months... and they will continue to change on through to its release this August. So, without further ado.... here you go....
Hey Harry,
I caught a special screening of the new John Cusack movie "Serendipity" back in January, but didn't have the time to do a review until now.
John Cusack plays an average guy who is buying gloves for his girlfriend (Bridget Monyahan from "Coyote Ugly") at the same time as Kate Beckinsale is buying gloves for herself. It happens that there is one pair of gloves left, and the two fight over it. Cusack finally agrees to let Kate have the pair, as long as she joins him at famous New York restaurant Serendipity's for a drink. Even though he has a girlfriend, he realizes that Kate has all the qualities that he has been looking for in a girl. She, however, doesn't exactly feel the same way. Although she does like him a lot, she is a avid believer in fate and destiny. She agrees to give him her phone number as long as their destiny wants them to be together. After a few mishaps on the streets of New York, the two go their seperate ways. A few years later, when both are engaged to be married, signs begin to appear showing that they are destined for eachother.
The movie was pretty good for a romantic comedy, especially because of Jeremy Piven who is hysterical as Cusack's best friend. Molly Shannon, however, tries too hard to be funny, and ends up getting no laughs.
The audience members in the theater and myself all seemed to enjoy the movie for the most part, except for the end. At the 3/4 mark, the movie starts to get very predictable and cliched, in fact you could probably figure out how it ends. Based on the comments that I heard from the other people, most of them didnt like the ending either. I overheard a Miramax exec saying that they'll most likely change it. That is why the movie is being released in August, as apposed to the planned spring date.
