John Cusack's SERENDIPITY trailer and a story about chance and love...

Hey folks, Harry here... Serendipity... Peter Chelsom's second release this year... Basic concept being... Two strangers meet by chance in a store. Have the greatest first date ever. But when the girl gives the guy her number, fate blows it from his hand and she decides it is fate... If they are destined for each other they will meet again... and that is that. 10 years passes and they both wonder if it was a mistake and they try to find each other. Hmmmm....

I assume everyone has a painfully romantic moment like this somewhere in their life... and me being the romantic duffus that I am will tell ya mine. Why? Because... today, today was a good day and I feel like sharing a bittersweet story of woe... Maybe it is because of all those stories that people wrote trying to win Liv Tyler's nightie... Whatever, you're getting it.

Setting... A year ago, about this time. I wander into TOWER RECORDS at 11pm on a wild chase for cool DVDs... I'm flipping through a bin as this crazy cool chick and I begin doing that nervous eye thing... You know the type, where you catch glimpses of one another, but as you do you look away? Those.

I'm thinking that perhaps this belle was trying to place where she knew me from... a magazine pic, tv... maybe my site... But I figure if she isn't going to say anything... I'll move to the Soundtrack section and see if she follows... So off I go...

I'm in the "S"s and I pick up the soundtrack to SINGIN' IN THE RAIN... And as I do, she begins approaching me. As is always the case when a beauty approaches my pulse races a tad and I turn to meet her as she says, "That's my favorite film!"

We stand there talking till closing. As we're rushed out of the store, and she tells me she wants to see me again and wants my number, I tell her, "No, look I hate phone tag games, they've ruined too many wonderful possible second encounters. I call you, you call me, we call back and forth and we just feel frustrated and/or desperate until we finally talk. Right now you are Ellen and I am Harry, you write poetry and paint and I write and sculpt. We like each other and there's a spark, so let's say we meet at Spider-House at 7pm tomorrow. No numbers, no maybe next times. If you are there then it is a go, because typhoons and hurricanes wouldn't keep me from the corner patio table at 7." She smiles and gives me a big hug and a great kiss and I'm dancing on the moon in exaggerated leaps and bounds.

I had just given the closest thing to a movie monologue love gesture that I probably ever will spout in my life. That next night I was at my table at 5:30pm.... Like I said, typhoons and hurricanes... no way I wasn't going to show. As 6:45pm came, so did doubt... Perhaps I creeped her out, maybe she was put off by it... maybe something came up, maybe she came to her senses, maybe.... maybe... 6:58... She arrives.

My heart soars... I had electric wonder vibes from her, and as she approached my table she had this gym bag with her and I ask, "What's in the bag?"

"It's my overnight bag. I hope you don't think I'm presumptious"

Oh my god... She's digs me! AWESOME! Ok, so we sit there at the corner table at Spiderhouse sipping coffee and chatting beneath the twinkling Christmas lights on the patio. Wonderful conversation. We go out for a wonderful dinner, she ate about half of hers, I ate about 2/3rds of mine... Our food got cold cause we were talking too much, or actually... just enough. She says she wants to come over to my place now, and I'm all butterflies and cool...

At my place she falls completely in love with the place... As we head for my room, she eyes all the dvds and says, "Mind if I choose something to put on?"

She enters my room holding Cocteau's BELLE ET LA BETE and GIRL ON A MOTORCYCLE... What a gal!?!?! She hops on the bed and we watch GIRL ON A MOTORCYCLE, which she just falls head over heels in love with. As we put on Belle Et La Bete she excuses herself to the restroom with her bag and comes back in a wonderfully soft and cuddly cotton nightie... She lays behind me perched on my shoulder watching the film... About halfway through she falls asleep against me. I did my updates that night... Wonderful night. We sleep in each others arms and awake with a kiss...

That morning we have a long lazy fun morning, breakfast and as I drop her off at her place, we make our next date... I'd meet her inside the Paramount theater for the first showing of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, the film was playing 3 times, I told her I'd be at all 3 screenings in case she should miss one.

That next Friday, I sat in the Paramount theater... and watched SINGIN' IN THE RAIN 3 times alone. The second time was the hardest, the third had tears and smiles... I love that film, and yeah it hurt... but ya know, life goes on and so does love. I hope SERENDIPITY is a good film, but somehow I think its ending will be a different tale from the one I just told. Enjoy the trailer... which by the way... I believe it tells you too much information...
