What's Neil Gaiman Doing To AVALON'

Hey folks, Harry here.... Seems like MIRAMAX is giving AVALON the PRINCESS MONONOKE treatment... well, at least they have Gaiman writing some "additional material" for Mamoru Oshii's AVALON. What this 'additional material' means though is unknown. Is Gaiman writing additional stuff to be filmed? Is he writing the subtitles (like Anthony Burgess once did for the Gerard Depardieu version of CYRANO DE BERGERAC)? Or is he writing a dub to be performed by all star talent? I don't know... But I will say this... I've seen AVALON, a fine film in the tradition of GHOST IN THE SHELL... an intellectual and visual delight... but I don't feel that as is it will play to a WIDE American audience (unfortunately)... What it will do is satisfy an exclusive audience of THINKING SCIENCE FICTION fans that can appreciate a story that makes you and allows you to think and ponder. Hopefully Gaiman will somehow improve an already wonderful experience.

Hello Harry,

I love the site. Just forwarding some information. On Neal Gaiman's "American Gods" journal website (AmericanGods.com) he mentioned, in passing, that he's been doing some writing for Avalon.

Here's what he said:

"...with the writers strike looming, I am madly trying to finish writing some additional material for a very cool Polish/Japanese film called AVALON, so am spending all my time in my hotel room playing and replaying the video of the film and making notes and writing bits."

Thought you might find this interesting.
