Hey folks, Harry here... ahhhh, the internet... Don't ya just love it that it is possible for apes like us to know that as we walk and breathe the air around us, that in New York, Spider-Man is swinging around TIMES SQUARE and that in New York, the Green Goblin is threatening to kill Mary Jane? God I love the internet... makes the world seem... cooler than it otherwise was....
Harry. Assorted gentlemen. Alexandra DuPont here. Couple of things:

I. FROM MY BROTHER MAXIMILLIAN: THE MILDEST OF
"SPIDEY" SET REPORTS
I just received the following missive from my younger brother Maximillian, with instructions to forward it to you: The little cuss apparently managed to sneak onto the "Spider-Man" set during a recent "consultation" trip to the City of Angels.
After giving his text a once-over for major typos (and removing assorted biographical details I'd just as soon he not reveal), I'm forwarding it to you. The meat of this report is, I promise, quite legitimate, if somewhat lean. Post this if you feel like it; there's some fairly decent (though somewhat spoilerific) dish here about "Spidey"'s climax.
(BTW, I've been meaning to bring up this debate in
Talk Back: Max spells the film's title "Spiderman,"
but it's "Spider-Man," isn't it? I expect there's
going to be some obsessive-compulsive SNOOT debate
about this in the coming year). Anyway, here's Max:

Hello, everybody. I'm Maximillian DuPont, and I'm Alexandra's little brother. Usually she doesn't like me to talk to other people, especially her friends. I have to keep quiet. She doesn't want me to "embarrass" her. But what she really wants to do is hog the spotlight. Has she ever told you that she has a brother who writes DVD reviews for a website? No! I'm her little brother and I was passed over. I'm smart! I'm not dumb, like everybody says. I'm smart.
But the news I have is so interesting that even she had to relax her so-called "standards" and pass this along. You see, I got onto the set of "Spiderman."
Yes, that's right. Hah, big sister, I got onto the set and you didn't! Nyannyanynannyanyanya! But here's the thing, sis: You COULD have got onto the set. Anybody could have. This set is wide open. All you have to do is drive up to the gate at the old MGM lot and say, "I'm with 'Spiderman'" and they wave you through!
So I'm pulling a Spielberg on the MGM lot and I'm terrified and looking over my shoulder and creeping around and trying to avoid everyone's eye, and here's what I see and hear.
For one thing, they've got an exterior inside an interior. What that means is that they've got the front of a 20 story building built inside the hangar-sized soundstage where "The Wizard of Oz" was shot. They are doing a lot of wire work there. A duplicate of the same structure also exists, but outside, on a lot a few miles away. If I followed what was going on right, this is the building in Manhattan where Mary Jane lives, and where the Green Goblin kidnaps her. In the scene I saw them shoot they were staging a stunt in which Mary Jane falls 20 stories. The set up is something like this. Spiderman (Toby Maguire) and the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) have squared off. GG has seized Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst). He is holding two cables. One is connected to a bus load of little kids. The other is connected to Mary Jane. He tells Spiderman that he has a choice. He can save the kids, or MaryJane. Then he lets go of both cables. Whom does Spidey save? Wait'll next year! They shot the fall of Mary Jane many, many times over.
So I'm walking around like I own the place, and it seems that I'm not the only one doing this. Last month some crew members saw a suspicious chick running outside the sound stage, and noticed that she was carrying two cans of film. They chased her. She ran off, dropping the cans. They never got her, but they got the film cans back, which were cans of "Spiderman" film (don't know if it was exposed or unexposed stock). However, what they haven't retrieved (yet, anyway) are the costumes that were stolen a couple of weeks ago. But then, people are always wandering on and off the set, and nobody knows who they are. Security is super-lax for a superhero film that everybody is curious about.
Willem Dafoe seemed like a nice guy. He's really short and has a huge head. Sam Raimi is also very nice. He has a goofy sense of humor, and wears clothes that are a couple of sizes too big for him. He likes to tease everyone. Kirsten Dunst is just a kid, a wisp of a thing, really. What she likes to do during an especially long, hot day of shooting is sneak down an alley and take off her __________ and air them out for a few minutes, then put _____ ____ __ back on. Must be a chick thing. Maybe they all do it.
Anyway, I'm not in L.A. anymore, so I don't have a
chance to sneak onto the set again, and anyway the
production is relocating to New York shortly. But I
thought that everyone should know that, from what I
saw, the film looks great. Cheers, Max.
***** END E-MAIL FORWARD *****
That is all.
Warmest,
Alexandra DuPont.
I don't do dishes!
And now we fly across the United States to New York.... where we learn....
Hi, Harry. Decided to wander Times Square today to see if I could find out what our favorite webhead was up to. Didn't think I was going to have any luck at first, but then I happened upon a gent wearing a headset. Asked him what he was up to - sure enough, he was with Spidey. He told me that they were shooting all of the buildings in the area from different angles (this was right in front of the Virgin Megastore on 7th Ave and 46th, or thereabouts) so that they could put Spider-Man in in postproduction, swinging from building to building.
I couldn't talk to the guy long, because I had to go down the road a bit and perform in a play. So there I was in a theater the size of my living room, performing for all of fifteen people, while the Coolest Movie Ever was shooting exactly one block away. Without me. Despite the many pictures I've sent them requesting extra work. In conclusion, there is no god.
Take it easy,
Darwin
and then we have....
Harry-
Anyway, I caught a chance to witness a Sony Imageworks second unit VFX crew shooting today in Times Square. Pretty cool stuff. We're total tech-heads/movie geeks, so we love this stuff. Pretty high-tech equipment... computer-controlled cameras linked in to a tricked out Powerbook that was recording positional data... some kind of specialized laptop-style rig with flywheels for X, Y and Z plane manual camera control...seems to scream match-move data for CG effects. Something I didn't recognize... a set of spheres on a three-post fork, one mirrored, one white and one medium photo-gray. My guess is some kind of calibration tool.
The shots were pretty dynamic... very promising stuff for the film. While I was there, they did one continuous shot starting from a bird's-eye view above a police car, sweeping to a look down the island, then around Time's Square and coming to rest above the Fleet Bank neon sign on the opposite side of the street. They also did a bunch of shots rotating around the rooftops. If the CG Spiderman is going to be moving this fast, and this dynamically, this could be some of the coolest VFX stuff since "bullet time". I'll see if I can snag some digital photos for you next time.
Peace-
"Wintermute"
and then there came this one....
Hey Harry,
just giving you an update on the shooting of the Spider-Man movie here in Sunnyside, Queens. The weather had been pretty bad last week but has warmed quickly here so shooting will now take place this Wed, Thurs and Fri ( April 18th, 19th and 20th) beginning at 10 PM. The area between Queens Blvd and 47th Ave on 41st, 42nd and 43rd have been reserved for shooting. Anyone coming to observe and take pictures should take John Rocker's favorite subway, the # 7 to 40th/Lowery stop and walk east towards the Mobile gas station and White Castles.
