Hey folks, Harry here with the long troubled TOWN & COUNTRY. There has been alot of hyperbole about the cost of this film... The rumors taking the budget beyond the realm of believability... but again and again it has been press about the BUDGET... Frankly, I never care about budgets... unless it raises the ticket price... Which they ain't doing for TOWN & COUNTRY... What I am concerned with... is whether or not Peter Chelsom (director of the genius FUNNY BONES and THE MIGHTY) was allowed to make HIS movie and not Warren Beatty's movie... that was the part of the rumor that concerned me... No matter though... I've been interested in his next film with Lloyd Dobler... um... I mean John Cusack flick called SERENDIPITY... But here's a review of TOWN & COUNTRY... not the budget, the film....
I am Project RAGE
I watched a film tonight that has been plagued with problems for almost two years. It should almost gain a medal for how long it has been on the Hollywood Reporter in production list. But very few merits should be given.
THE PLOT
Warren beatty plays porter starter an architect who together with his wife of 25 years an interior designer (Diane Keaton), Porter has thoughts of cheating from thoughts of his best friend Griffin (Garry Shandling) who cheated, who we found out is really gay, Griffin's wife Mona (Goldie Hawn) has an affair with Porter, Porter has an affair with some cello player(Natassaja Kinski), Porter has a son played by Josh Hartnet. All havoc insues in this chummy chuckle -fest happy realistic comedy.
RESPECT
This movie fails miserably on many points, with being all over the map. Not like I enjoy a comedy that is bizarre and strange. If to watch this movie, Watch it for Andie MacDowell's parents played by Charlton Heston, and his wheelchair ridden wife. Heston is on overacting level 8. But is perfect. Beatty does fine, Shandling is great, not for his character, but his intelligent way of delivery. The only Kudo's should be give to Cinematographer (William A. Fraker) Who lit everyone beautiful and had some very intelligent setups. For some reason he has some curse( Island of dr. Moreau, Street fighter, and this movie) Hopefully he gets a rabbits foot. He is a cinematographer who can light anyone beautifully.Alot of work for him on his next movie(The Hunted) with saddlebag cheeks Tommy lee jones.
RAGE:
Goldie hawn was not good, and very secondary( I believe she was the one who brought this movie together, too) Also seeing her butt felt me very uncomfertable. Diane Keaton was wretched and I believe she only can do"I hate men" films from now on. She was the character you were supposed to feel sorry for and you wanted to take a chainsaw to her everstandard mullet.( my own personal revenge for watching HANGING UP last year). Josh Hartnet, Jeanna Elfman, Nastassja Kinski, Andie Macdowell. WHY ARE YOU IN THIS FUCKIN MOVIE??!! Your character's make completely no sense.
This movie reeks, and probably is set for the older ladies demographic. Who probably wont care for it because of its immorality. So when they order their no butterflavoring popcorn and bottled water, and think this is OVERBOARD II Think again Blue Haired. Stay home and go watch the 2000 episode of Perry mason and get moist.
