Hey folks, Harry here with news about who will create that Chicago Prohibition Sound for ROAD TO PERDITION. Thomas Newman is an interesting composer, I really did care for his AMERICAN BEAUTY work, but ya know... this film has more cinematic flourishes to accentuate than AMERICAN BEAUTY... and I can't wait to hear what he does... and as always... I present the Ghost of Benny Herrmann to light your way...
Hey Harry, how are ya?
It's the Ghost of Benny Herrmann here. Yeah, so I've been out of touch lately. What can I say? I've been spending my time haunting Alan Silvestri for ripping me off in What Lies Beneath. How come I'm more in style now than when I was alive?
Anyway, I thought you could use a little movie music news. Yeah, it's pretty meager, but whaddaya want, I'm a dead guy!
So here it is... Thomas Newman has pretty much landed The Road to Perdition. No big surprise, right? American Beauty made a pretty big noise for him. Still, this should be a chance for him to try some new sounds and get out of the Percussion Toys mode he's been (unwillingly) stuck in for the last few years. But beyond that, look for there to big a jazz club scene featuring a couple of new sultry swing tunes (and a live performance) by a guy named Orbert Davis. Davis is a Chicago-scene trumpeter and bandleader & not a huge name, but well respected by the jazz crowd. He hasn't filmed his scenes yet, but he has penned his charts.
Like I said, this news isn't gonna cause anyone to join me in the afterlife, but at least we now know a little more about Mendes' mood-setting techniques.
Drifting back to vapors,
Benny Herrmann
