You know Gurmo, that's one of them Coaxial spies, you know that other cool area of Ain't It Cool that you read all the time!!! Well, I'm not sure what a Gurmo is, but I think that's what some chimpanzee's say about the mean one of the Three Stooges.
The version I saw was a finished cut, although including the reel changes. Appearantly, this version will never make it to the screen, since they pulled it back after some bad test screeenings to re-edit(and possibly reshoot) it. Too bad.
This is a very fine movie, IMHO. It has the same mix that made the original so entertaining, combining horror with absurdist humor. Although director Anthony Waller goes a little more for the jokes this time, he never loses touch with the more horrific elements of the story. The story, ah yes: Three American students come to Paris. One of them meets a beautiful woman (Julie Delpy, coincidentally a beautiful woman in real life). Too bad she's a werewolf (the daughter of the man in the original movie, and that's the only connection). They fall in love, but too bad. There are some more nasty werewolfs on the loose in the strets of Paris, and the boys dead friends keep popping up as rotting corpses. The good: The story, the effects and the handling really gel into a satisfying whole. Anthony Waller is able to pull of stuff that would seem ludicrous if handled by someone with less talent. Even the CGI-werewolfs are excellent, jumping around and thus seeming much faster and deadlier. There are some nice location shots, and I was reminded of old Universal horror movies (the Americans coming into a strange European town, getting involved in weird stuff).
The bad: The ending is just too convenient (they are probably reshooting it anyway). And the story coulb be a bit more original (it's as obvious a remake as "Escape from L.A.", but...). Also, the movie is rather harmless (not a lot of blood, sex with no nipples), but that doesn't lessen its impact. And Waller breaks it with one scene that's so gross (and funny) that you think Peter Jackson directed it. Overall, a good movie, heads and shoulders above bigger budgetet crap like "Event Horizon" (run that story by me again?) or "Mimic" (at the end of the day, it "Men against giant roaches", and a rather pathetic remake of "Them!"). Figures that they pulled it back again. They probably want to stupify a bit more... Gets both of my thumbs (and my big toes) up.
