Here's a nice little report on what Selma Hayek will be doing for the next year or so...
Just wanted to let you know that the shooting of "Frida Kahlo" will start April 7th in Mexico City. Salma Hayek, Alfred Molina, Antonio Banderas, Geoffrey Rush, Ashley Judd, Edward Norton, Roger Rees, Mia Maestro and Patricia Reyes SpÃndola star. Pic will have locations in various cities of Mexico, in New York and Paris. It is being directed by Julie Taymor and produced by Hayek herself.
As soon as this movie is over, Salma will head on to a very ambitious project. She'll star in the adaptation of "Arrancame la Vida" ("Tear Out My Heart"), a best-seller by Angela Maesttra. It is about a woman in the mid of the Mexican Revolution that is abused by her husband (Jesus Ochoa), whom she later discovers is also a murderer. Pic will be Mexican, since it will be filmed during the strike. Because of Salma being a foreigner, she can film be involved in other projects outside the US in the meantime.
Besides, she has just finished filming a new movie for Mike Figgis called "Hotel", starring other people such as Burt Reynolds, Lucy Liu, Rhys Ifans, David Schwimmer, Valeria Golino, Julian Sands, Saffron Burrows and many more. It was filmed in Venice with the same technique used in "Timecode".
Three very interesting projects for Salma, whom I see AICN people love. Great indeed.
See ya'

Father Geek back just long enough to welcome back our South American editor Coffin Joe Jr. with his regular Tuesday Latin-AICN report from deep in the Brazilian rainforest... Nos Vemos Luego...
Hello boys and girls , Coffin Joe Jr. here for another edition of Latin-AICN . I got my copy of the " Cherry Falls " DVD yesterday , and boy what a shame . Besides the DVD being a complete and total piece of shit ( they included a John Ritter horror/comedy on the same disc as a double feature and there are no extras ) , the real shame is that this flick ain´t reaching a wider audience . I think the distributor is USA Films , and did they screw up big time . Think of all the " Scream " copycats you saw for the last few years . Painful memories I bet . Most of them sucked hard . " Cherry Falls " doesn´t . It´s that simple . There are good performances , a funny , original story with a great twist and the audience is given a FUN horror flick . Can you believe that ? Well , it´s true . The director is Geoffrey Wright , who did the Russel Crowe movie " Romper Stomper " . He knows his stuff . Michael Biehn is in it , he´s always cool . Jay Mohr is pretty funny too . If it is so damn good , and FUN , why did it receive this crappy treatment ? Really ? Can anyone find a reasonable motive ? I read that they were having some problems with the MPAA , and stuff . So ? Make the cuts they want for a theatrical version and then release it uncut on DVD ! A nifty special edition with a commentary track , documentaries , theatrical trailer , interviews , a good widescreen transfer . That´s what people want . Is it really that difficult to figure it out ? Come on . There´s a huge audience for this type of movie , specially for a DVD version ( look at how the Anchor Bay horror DVDs are doing , they are selling like hotcakes , the Argento stuff , Fulci´s films , " Hellraiser " , all special editions , done with consideration and love for the fans , who do their job of going to the store and actually buying these wonderful discs .) . Ok ? I urge everyone out there to write or call USA´s home video department and get them to issue a proper disc , worthy of this film . !
God damn it .
Enough of my stupid ideas and dreams , let´s get to the news :
ARGENTINA

COFFIN JOE JR. MOVIE REVIEW
" Possible Loves " (2001)
Director : Sandra Werneck
There was good buzz surrounding this local offering , it won an award at the Sundance Film Festival , so me and the other students who went to this advance screening were feeling pretty confident that this wouldn´t be too bad . Well we were right . This film is pretty good . It´s not pretentious , which is always a good thing , and is fully aware of its nature : sweet romantic comedy that was made to entertain . As far as romantic comedies go , this one is not very corny , although there are some awkward moments , but the funny ones make up for the stupid ones . I told you guys in one of the previous Latin-AICN editions about the story : three tales , same characters , different scenarios , relationship mayhem follows . The gay scenario ( watch the movie , you´ll know what I mean ) is the best one , the most complex too , with every character going through a whole rainbow of emotions , giving the actors a chance to stretch their thespian muscles . Murilo BenÃcio ( who seems to be everywhere these days ) gives good performances in every scenario , and he is the star of the show . His real life , and movie , girlfriend , Carolina Ferraz is good , in particular when she´s playing the bitter version of her character in the gay scenario . The rst of the cast is pretty solid , I liked Irene Ravache as BenÃcio´s mom . She stole most of the scenes she was in . The direction is subtle , relying on composition and smooth , simple camera moves , not a lot of fancy visual gymnastics . The director is smart enough to know that the movie is more about the characters , their dialogue , so she lets them do the work . A good script also helps , and she has one that delivers in spades with smart characters who feel like real human beings , despite a bit of stupid dialogue here and there . Overall , Sandra did her job very well . Bottom line is that if you are looking for some romantic good times , you can do a lot worse than " Possible Loves " . Kudos to director Sandra Werneck .
