Hey folks, Harry here with our first look at Bill Paxton's directorial debut... and from the sound of it, the movie is well on the path to being a very solid directorial debut... "That's just great man!" Absolutely! I've heard just a tad here and there about this film from friends that saw it, but didn't write in... and while he's made a tough thriller twist flick... well it looks like this is one to watch.... BEWARE OF SPOILERS.... Now I hand you over to the Stealth Studio Girl... the owner of the nicest set of eyes inside the house of suits....
Harry-
I work at a major studio. Night before last there was a screening on our lot that I snuck into. There was all this buzz surrounding the film, and it wasn't one of ours (hence the sneaking in part.) Anyway, "Frailty" stars Bill Paxton (I've been a big fan since he played "Chet" in "Weird Science") and Matthew McConaughey, benchmarking Mr. Paxton's directorial debut.
I must say, this is one of those, "get out of your lazy boy chair and go see it" movies. As is customary for a first screening, Bill introduced the film saying it was a 'rough cut'.
As you are aware,
a 'rough cut' usually means, "loosely" tied together
(if at all), with
tons of unnecessary scenes, super long and hard to
follow (at times).
SPOILERS BEGIN...
Well the 'rough cut' that I saw, along with about 250
audience members,
including Rob Lowe, was an original, well-acted and
pieced together
film. What's it about? An emotionally charged man
pays a visit to the
FBI headquarters in Dallas, TX to confess that his
brother, who has just
recently killed himself, is in fact the "GodsHand"
serial killer.
McConaughey is our narrator throughout the film,
recalling his happy
youth until one fateful day. His father (Bill Paxton)
has a vision
from the heavens, it's God. God tells him that he and
his sons are now
'servants of god' and must fulfill their destiny by
ridding the earth of
all the "demons". The oldest son thinks his father
has lost his head,
the younger son believes in his father's visions. As
the story unfolds,
the father and son team search out demons and destroy
them. All the
while Fenton (the oldest son) tries to convince his
younger brother,
Adam, to run away with him. Adam refuses and it is
Fenton who is then
locked in the shed basement until he 'BELIEVES'.
END SPOILERS!!!!
The film has such a twist at the end, that by the closing scene, you are stupedified, exhausted and astonished.
Harry, I suggest you get yourself a sneak peek of this film. Bill, Matthew and the kids in the film and are all excellent, especially Matthew O'Leary. I have to keep reminding myself that this was a 'rough cut'.
I only hope that I'll be able to get myself into additional screenings as they refine and improve this "Silence of the Lambs", "Kiss the Girls", "Jagged Edge" thriller.
