SXSW: Annette Kellerman chimes in on Linklater's WAKING LIFE

Hey folks, Harry here and I couldn't agree more with Annette Kellerman's review of Linklater's masterpiece, WAKING LIFE... a film of stunning vision and accomplishment... Really it must be seen to be believed. Read on...

Hello everyone! Its been a while since you've heard form me, but this year's SXSW film festival has me fully back for the attack! The quality of the films I have seen so far have completely surpassed any expectations. I mean, there were plenty of great films in the past few years at this fest- but there have always been a fairly equal amount of disappointments. So far, after three days into the fest, I have yet to be disappointed. So in eager anticipation of the next screening...I'm gonna make this short and sweet, beginning with WAKING LIFE.

Wow! is really the first thing I have to say about this masterpiece directed by Richard Linklater. There is so much cool stuff going on in this film, it's really hard to know where to begin, As most of you already may know, the film revolves around actor Wiley Wiggins as he journeys through various dream states. Each dream state is headlined by its own colorful (and I do mean colorful) cast of everyday philosophers.

Now, to some, this review may already be inciting yawns and groans- that is until I go on to explain that each and every frame of this film displays some of the most exuberant and innovative animation I've seen. The way that the style of animation and the story meld is absolutely inspiring. Wiley's character flows from place to place with incredible subtlety- barely speaking a word until halfway into the film. Each person he encounters extolls upon him various philosophies of life, death, and most importantly dreams. Thanks to brilliant pacing, Wiley's character begins to make various revelations about his own state of consciousness, just as the audience does- culminating in a somewhat anti-climactic, yet wholly effective ending.

Man, I was so pleased by this film! I can already tell you that many people may criticize the sometimes never-ending diatribes by the characters of the film and others may not be fans of the jumpy, sometimes confusing animation style. Some may even complain that the premise of the film too closely resembles that of SLACKER. On the other hand, all of these characteristics of the film will be the reasons that some audiences like it at all! But I hope that most of you will completely appreciate and love this film for being visually new, thought-provoking, and yes- totally entertaining! Well, I said short and sweet and I meant it! Never fear, you1ll be hearing plenty more from me later on!

Until next time, Annette.
