Hey folks, Harry here with Looney Toon chiming in with a look at PASSING STONES one of South By Southwest's Narrative First Feature Film division flicks and from the sound of it, Looney Toon had quite a bit of fun with this flick. Let's see what others see... maybe even me, though I haven't seen it yet... perhaps soon...
Hey Headgeek.
Looney Toon here. SXSW is already in full swing and the great ones keep on rolling in. I'm currently scratching my head over a really cool comedy playing called Passing Stones. I saw it at the Dobie today with a small audience and was pleasntly suprised. First of all as with Ginger Snaps I'm not too ecstatic on the title. A retrospective on kidney problems it's not, so relax yall. What it is is a great little character piece made for a measly 3500 dollars. (holy cripes batman!! Cheapola!) Cheap but warm and satisfying. I was first intrigued by the synop of a spiritual message from god. (love religous philosophy type stuff, so I figured, what the heck.) What I won't do is spoil the story. What I will do is simply introduce the characters and whet your appitite.
Leon: the middle brother mean spirited 30 year old paper boy living with his mother.
Needles: Younger brother who huffs paint and smokes crack.
Gary: Older brother who is a Christian shaman who is married to a drag queen.
Rosalyn: Gary's drag queen.
Meridith: A girl with Tourettes, who smokes medicinal crack and barks at herself and screams What! What! Lardass!
Other sister: Sane girl sister to Meridith, the only anchored character in the film.
Eve: The catatonic mother of the girls who eeriely chants "where is your father..?
Sound silly? It's funny but not absurd. Something about the characters meshes and creates a dynamic that has you waiting to see what each one does next. All are wonderfully likeable. They feel like characters that could easily be used in several films without ever getting old. I credit this to great acting, writing and as the director said in the Q and A, hours of rehersal. This is a fun little movie with some real gems of moments in it. I hope that as it plays two more times at the festival it's audience grows.
