will this week go out with a bang or a whimper? well, kitchen party was a very clever bang in my book. really only shot on two very small locations, partly because of the plot (and the name) and partly i would guess due to budget. but do you remember the first time you saw the movie "kids"? and you thought, wow these no name kids are great actors (kind of going back to the neo-realism philosophy of using young kids to tell touching, realist tales, blah blah blah). well, kitchen party serves up some great acting in both the kids and adults. some really great humor and one liners. just great directing and writing all around the board.
i was watching sundance the other day and there was a short about the making of kitchen party. something i did not expect to ever see, it was not production like star wars, titanic, or waterworld that leaves the masses so curious about the production. but it did answer on question, yes, it is a real house, and yes it was shot all in the kitchen with no movable walls, just some of the counter space and things like that. pretty impressive after you watch this. sundance was advertising this as a up and coming hit in the theaters, so watch out for it. great entertainment (in the tradition of a ferris buler's day off for the indie world).
