so this is the most planning i have done all week for films. first of all, we knew we were only seeing two tonight, and secondly we wasted away so much of the day, and lastly, john was paying $6.00 for each movie so it felt like we had to think more about the decisions.
the first choice is dead man's curve which takes a very clever plot (from a rumor that i knew when i was in college, but no one has ever used in a film, that i know of) added a few twists towards the end (maybe a few too any, in my opinion) and came out with a pretty good, yet mainstream film.
something i learned from reading harry's review, was that this is the same director as the last supper, a highly underrated film that received little screen time and low video rentals (so go on out and rent it, it is really great, trust me and harry). thinking back, i can see the similarities of the two, besides the fact that they are both about plotting murders and college students. they are both written in a very sly, twisted, political manner, with a lot of strange undertones that add to the mood of the film.
instead of the onslaught of cameos in last supper, dead man's curve attacks you with pop culture references, especially music. depressing music, which adds an interesting feel to the film (it's not a film i would expect bela lugosi's dead by bauhaus to play not once but twice during key scenes, basically i thought this song only would work in a vampire movie, in which i have never heard it used, interesting, actually the hunger, which is a great david bowie/ susan sarandon combination, one i would not expect to ever see).
like i said, this film will appeal to a mainstream audience, despite the lack of popular actors or a big name director. like my friend john said, the subject will carry this film to all college kids across the country. i see a very catchy trailer, sort of like scream, just a bunch of young actors, good music, action packed suspenseful edits, the whole nine yards. if you don't see it in the theater, i recommend this as a rental with your college chums, on a night that you should be studying. it would give you some ideas on how to improve your grades in that calculus class you're failing. just don't be stupid and watch this with your roommate, they might get the same idea.
