Greetings, awards addicts! ROBOGEEK here with a round-up of some awards handed out over the weekend, which may or may not prove to be key indicators for this month's Oscars on March 25.
On Saturday, the Producers Guild of America handed out their 12th Annual Golden Laurel Awards. GLADIATOR was named best picture, with producers Douglas Wick and Branko Lustig (now that's a name) receiving the Darryl F. Zanuck producer of the year award. (It behooves me to note that PGA winners have predicted the Oscar eight years out of the past eleven, according to Variety.)
Then on Sunday, the Writers Guild of America handed out their 53rd annual awards, naming Kenneth Lonergan's YOU CAN COUNT ON ME best original screenplay, and Stephen Gaghan's TRAFFIC best adapted screenplay. (Inside.com tells us that the WGA prizes have, in the last decade, been an accurate Oscar predictor 60 percent of the time for original screenplay, and 70 percent for adapted.)
While my two favorite films of last year (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON and WONDER BOYS) sadly left the above proceedings empty-handed, I am happy to report that my favorite TV show - THE WEST WING - won the best television drama award at both. (PGA named SEX IN THE CITY best comedy series, while WGA picked FRASIER.)
