storefront hitchcock

for some reason, going into this film, i reduced my expectations so much, that i thought i would hate it. this is the one film that i knew exactly what it was going to be, and i just thought it would be too basic and drawn out (how much do you think one man, in one setting could entertain even the biggest fan?)

well maybe since i had such low expectations, maybe because i worship robyn hitchcock, and his between song chatter, or maybe because it is a great film, i loved this. i was not bored one second, always something funny or amusing to look at or listen to, or both. then i was thinking that i could listen to robyn for hours on end, with none of these amusements, and i would still be in complete bliss. so maybe i am the wrong person to review this film.

but if you do not know robyn hitchcock, or the soft boys, just think along the lines of a modern day syd barrett (but less insane, more comprehendible, and more attractive). he has also received many comparisons to lour reed (mainly because both the velvet underground and the soft boys were completely unknown, except in nyc and london, respectively, until all of a sudden all of these bands started saying that they were both major influences on their sound. and then all the fans of these new bands like rem and yo la tengo started buying all of these old albums and realizing the genius too little too late). i don't know what else to say, just give him a chance and he'll grow on you like a fungus that encapsulates your whole being, spitting you out and manifesting a part of you into the starry sky, where you defy all sense of gravity until the end of the world, and you decide it is time to move on to bigger and better things (this is my meager attempt at a robyn hitchcock monologue, though no sea creatures or female reproductive organs are mentioned, which makes it not very authentic, sorry robyn, i tried).

so i still have not met up with john. i was hoping he would track me down during my strictly regimented schedule. so something went wrong. maybe he decided not to come (that bastard), maybe he got lost (that idiot), maybe he is at the hostel (i doubt that) or maybe he is at some bar on 6th street (i would not doubt that one bit), or maybe he went through some kind of worm hole into another dimension (and i did not know how relevant this statement would be). (sorry about the little aggression i took out on you john, if you are reading this. actually john, i will not reveal his last name, is an aspiring filmmakers trying to get his first film made, so maybe you will here from him some time in the near future, since he is much further ahead of the game than i am).
