instead, i patiently awaited the late showing of scrapple. now this name hit me right at home, pennsylvania being the proud home to scrapple, as scotland is the home of the much beloved haggis. funny how both of these "substances" are a complete mystery to even the most educated connoisseurs of fine pulverized "meat." but before i get myself in a similar jam as oprah and the meat industry, i will lay off this subject. just read upton sinclair's the jungle and you will completely understand. besides the fact that i was born and raised on scrapple (until i knew any better). yuckie!
scrapple has more to do with drugs and the 70's than it does with scrapple, though there is a pig (whether or not pig's meat is included in scrapple is a mystery), and the pig's name is scrapple (it is by far the best acting from a pig since babe). i could write for hours about this film, it is definitely in my top 5, if not number 1 film of the festival (comes in close ranking with six string and pigeon egg, but you don't know about those yet). there's a great animation sequence, but i won't give away any more than that. the last thing i can say is that this will obviously be compared to dazed and confused several times over (and i admit, that i am guilty of this comparison too). but the only similarity is that they are both period pieces in the 70's and both recreate the atmosphere incredibly well. any comparisons with each other are only compliments in my eyes. a definite must see, even if it is on video. just one more thing. i was so tired by the time i saw scrapple, since it started late due to the crowds outside of the newton boys premiere, but I stayed wide awake laughing away, scene after scene.
i will leave you with one statement. do you realize how warped "reality" seems after seeing so many films in such a short period of time? not only that, but time just is all messed up (especially since i don't wear a watch, so my days were timed by start and ending times of movies and panel discussions).
until next time, when you will get a few more days of sxsw the vertov way.
