barbie nation/ cuba 15

so i know your next question is whether i know what some barbie collectors do with their dolls. i do now, and you could too. well, even if you do not really want to know, barbie nation is still a well made, humorous documentary.

for some reason the documentaries that have always entertained me the most seem to make fun of the characters or subject of the film (the best example of this would be michael moore). both the preceding short, cuba 15, and barbie nation pull this feat off quite well. the best part about the way these films pull this off is that they don't really mock the characters or subject, they both just go with everything that is said, following the "plot" in a serious and respectable manner, keeping the documentary on focus.

cuba 15, really kept me fascinated. i never knew how serious it was to turn 15 for a girl in cuba (hence the name). of course i will leave everything else for when you get to see this short. my favorite scene involves che, and that's all I have to say (that rhymes pretty well). i would assume or at least hope that either sundance or ifc will put it in one of their rotations (but this is just a hunch on my part with no factual information to back that claim) and if they have not thought of it, i think they should seriously consider it.

i wish i could tell you the things that people do with barbies, but then what motivation would you have to see this film? and by the end of the film there is only one question you could ask, why do they do that (i would ask who would do that, but after the film, you'll have that answer)?

i had a conversation a while back about the term "white trash." it was in reference to the area of pennsylvania where i went to college and a friend of mine now lives. but a third person, from d.c. (if that means anything), did not know of the term. i really wish i had bury me in kern county to use as a model for the third person.
