INTERNATIONAL
-This last Sunday , the Spanish Oscars , called " Goyas " , were handed out and Spanish actress Carmen Maura won the Best Actress Goya for her performance in Alex de la Iglesia ( " Day of the Beast " , " Perdita Durango " ) ´s latest flick called " La Comunidad " . Another big winner at the Goyas was the movie " Plata Quemada " from Argentina , which won the Best Foreign Film ( spoken in Spanish ) Award , received by director Marcelo Pyñeiro , who had previously won the same award in 1997 for the movie " Cenizas del Paraiso " .
-Finally here´s my look at " Capitães de Abril " , the directorial debut of Maria de Medeiros , the Portuguese actress who starred in " Pulp Fiction " . The movie is set during the seventies , one date in particular , April 25th 1974 , the Day of the Portuguese revolution . I´ll start off this review saying that I enjoyed the movie . As always I won´t spoil the movie , briefly I can tell you that the plot takes place in the middle of all the revolution madness , but it revolves mainly around fictional characters . Everything is stylish , really well photographed , with a lot of really glorious shots of crowds , huge ones , and there´s also a bunch of cool nasty shots of dead bodies lying around , somewhere in Africa ( won´t say much else ) . One thing that stays clear throughout the picture is the director´s enthusiasm for the material , and how she lets the performances be the real treasure this movie has to offer ( she is after all an actress ) , yet she took her time to create a visually beautiful film . I have some issues with the script though . Once again , no spoilers , so I´ll say that the movie tries to adress too many characters and their particular subplot , I mean Maria de Medeiros should have done a better job as far as editing the movie . It´s not bad that it ruins the movie , but it could be tighter . Leaner . Still , for her debut as a director it´s pretty impressive , pointless subplots and all . The movie won a few awards already , including one here at the São Paulo Film Fest last year . Don´t know if there´s distribution for the U.S. , so if you got the opportunity to watch it at a festival , do yourself a favor and go witness a beautiful directorial debut from a great actress and a promising new director .
