SUNDANCE: Shinebox started to hate, then love MAELSTROM!!!

Hey folks, Harry here with another report from SUNDANCE, this time it concerns MAELSTROM which apparently starts off quite harsh before transforming into an entirely different sort of experience. That's why ya watch THE WHOLE THING.... riiiight? Right. Here's ShineBox....

Harry, this is a rundown on the film Maelstrom that I caught at Sundance.

I hated this movie for the first ten to fifteen minutes. And then it won me over. Unlike most movies this movie starts dark and depressing and then gets very happy and light. All of the tragedy is at the beginning and the good times are at the end.

The reason I hated this movie for the first half hour is that really the first images we see are an abortion. The lead character is having one. I'm pretty against abortion, so this kind of pissed me off, and it was very hard for me to identify with a charcter willing to murder a fetus. But that's just me. But after you got into the movie (which is, in a bizzare stroke of genius, narrated by a fish) you started to actually want to see this character win. Sort of.

It's hard to make an audience sympathize with a character whos killed the father of her love interest. Denis Villenevue (the director) manages to make the audience feel really good about the whole thing.

I don't want to give too much away, because the movie is very good and if I knew anymore than that it might have made the movie not quite as good. But I bet most will hate the first fifteen minutes.
