DGA & Broadcast Critics Awards News!

Greetings, meat popsicles! ROBOGEEK here, still processing last night's Golden Globe Awards, which (for the most part) gave me great joy - especially Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film, both won by my favorite film of 2000, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. (At this point, how can it not get a Best Picture Oscar nomination? Rock on, Ang!)

Anyway, even more awards and nominations entered the world today. First off, the Directors Guild of America today announced their 53rd annual nominations for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film...

2000 DGA nominations:
Cameron Crowe, ALMOST FAMOUS
Ang Lee, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON
Ridley Scott, GLADIATOR
Steven Soderbergh, ERIN BROKOVICH
Steven Soderbergh, TRAFFIC

...which could very well mirror this year's Best Director (and Picture) Oscar nominees, though I'm personally still pulling for Curtis Hanson and WONDER BOYS (my second favorite film of 2000).

The winner will be announced at the DGA Awards dinner March 10 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. (It's worth noting that the DGA winner has gone on to win the Best Director Oscar every year but four. And FYI, only one other director besides Soderbergh has been nominated twice in one year - Francis Ford Coppola in 1974 for THE GODFATHER PART II and THE CONVERSATION.)

Next up we have the Broadcast Film Critics Association (the largest critics group in the country with 145 members; FYI, the Golden Globes are voted on by only 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association). Anyway, today at their Awards Luncheon they announced their pick for Best Picture...

2000 BFCA Best Picture:
GLADIATOR

...mirroring last night's Golden Globe winner. (And in case you've forgotten, the other nominees were "Almost Famous," "Billy Elliot," "Cast Away," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Erin Brockovich," "Quills," "Thirteen Days," "Traffic," "Wonder Boys," and "You Can Count On Me.") Awards in other categories were previously announced, and can be found at http://www.bfca.org/criticschoiceawards.asp

So ponder all the Oscar implications below! Remember, nominations are announced February 13, and the awards are presented March 25 at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium.
