Hey folks, Harry here.... While I have sent John Robie and that old man Moriarty in the general direction of Sundance, I have yet to hear from them about safely arriving in Sundance. As they were driving, it is my strong belief that it is possible that Robie and Moriarty might have become distracted in Las Vegas.
The old man has old memories of debauchery and mayhem there, and I am praying that his and Robie's first true love... MOVIES.... will prevail and we will see them sending daily reports from the wilds of SUNDANCE.
However, there are a ton of films and a ton of things going on at Sundance, and no two people can cover the festival the way all of you folks can. If you see something that lit you up.... You send it to me. You saw something that stole hours of your life and you want to warn other festival goers.... You send it to me.
In today's issue of Variety a Dana Harris and Cathy Dunkley had the following to say:
And while street parking was still abundant for the moment, that availability was poised to evaporate in the next 24 hours as agents, producers, filmmakers and assorted wannabes began to crowd the sidewalks of Main Street.
That's right.... Variety called YOU an "Assorted Wannabe"!!! You gonna take that? I mean, you are the public, the film lovers, the folks that made the trek not for money, not to get rich quick, but to watch movies. Well, while they might classify you as an 'Assorted Wannabe' over there at Variety, I find that you.... Each and every one of you at Sundance is a valuable part of the team that helps let other fans know what is on the up and up. What movies Rock and which movies are droll.
In the past, you folks have uncovered THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, GIRLFIGHT, GODS AND MONSTERS, SMOKE SIGNALS and on and on.... You are the first line of action on finding these jewels, and I can't wait to read what you've seen and what you think. And together, we'll show those 'usedtobes' what it is we're made of.
To start off... Over at SLAMDANCE there are a pair of films that I've seen that are damn fun. One is BLACK DAYS Directed by Ari Margolis & James Morley III. Imagine if Kevin Smith and David Mamet dropped acid together and decided to do a modern day Preston Sturges film noir riff on the comic genre and decided to work with pretty much all unknowns and it actually worked. The is a sick slick twisted fun ride, and when all cylinders are going on this one, it is a blast. The tongue tied Gordon is freakin hilarious. And the comic book dynamics of this black and white feature are just killer. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Then there is THE TROUBLE WITH LOU, an 85 minute movie dealing with the pitfalls and terrors of being a chronic masturbator. I really can't believe this movie exists, but everyone that attended my SLAMDANCE Austin trip really really were shocked into laughter consistently. It isn't a perfect film, but it is so damn at odds with itself, and so bizarre... that I just couldn't stop laughing. I really can't believe the jackhammer masturbation scene... the shoe-polish lubrication... god, you have no idea. It isn't serious, but then, neither is masturbation.
Alright, I look forward to seeing your reports... as the screeners continue to arrive here at Geek Headquarters... I'll be updating you with my thoughts on the winners I've seen! HERE WE GO....
