Hey folks, Harry here... Bluelou Boyle is pointing us towards this latest update at www.clivebarker.com that THE THIEF OF ALWAYS is no longer at Universal. Well, I contacted some folks at ILM and began to hear how it came down. It seems that Ed Solomon (BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURES, CHARLIE'S ANGELS, MEN IN BLACK, etc) had turned in an excellent screenplay adaptation from Clive's original work. Now, I'm sure you are wondering why the folks at ILM would now jack and sheet about this project, but the film was intended from the beginning to be a photographic computer animated film animated by Industrial Lights and Magic. Well, this was intended to be the go ahead project for them after UNIVERSAL took a dump on the FRANKENSTEIN project that had such potential... From what I'm told, Universal turned the project down not because of the script... but because they didn't want to make a digital picture... or so the story I'm getting goes. HOWEVER, it seems that Clive Barker and Ed Solomon and ILM will be taking the project out and on the rounds to try and get it hooked up with someone. This would probably be a real winner for DISNEY DIGITAL - if they ever decided to make another film.... or FOX's followup to TUSKER.... or even DREAMWORKS' slate.... Hopefully some studio head will have the vision to see this story, what purports to be a great screenplay and ILM could be greatness.... Keep your fingers crossed!
Hey Harry,
Bad News I'm afraid. www.clivebarker.com reports that the proposed film adaption of 'The thief of always' is no longer with Universal. No reason is given, but Clive is looking for a new home for this project. Man, what a shame. Although written for kids, this story has that timeless feel to it, you read it when your young and then later as an adult, looking at it from a different perspective. Kind of like the Narnia books. Oh well, at least there is the Albaret Quartet to look forward to. Disney has the rights to that series I think.(Also by Barker and partly inspired by the Narnia books). Here's hoping the Weaveworld TV series hits the mark.
