Latin-AICN: BARRIO 13; El Lugar donde estuvo el para

Hey cine fans, Father Geek here along with LOBO to post up our Latin-AICN report for this week. Coffin Joe won't be with us this week... he's on a mission to see and hear every MAJOR Rock band on the planet. Yeah you read that right. You see there is a huge Rock n Roll concert going on in Rio (Brazil) for about 10 days and every group on earth is using it as an excuse to party in one of our world's greatest party towns. I wish I could be with you Coffin Joe, make sure to tell us all about it when you get back to Sao Paulo. First off I've got this mini-review of a truely international film filmed in Colombia in Spanish, by an Iranian with the aid of French and German backers, and of course its been playing NOWHERE in the states as yet. Here's the letter ol' Father Geek received this morning...

La Virgen de los sicarios(2000)... aka Our Lady of the Assassins by Barbet Schroeder is amazing. I managed to see it, twice, at the Latin American film festival in Havana Cuba last month. The fact that I thought this was brilliant and saw it twice is considerable considering it was shown in un-subtitled Spanish, which is a language I don't speak, at all. But this is one of those rare films in which every element tells the story, so the absence of dialogue did nothing to diminish its impact. And I am not even a great fan of his previous films. I have no idea if there is an american distributor for this yet, but feel the need to start some buzz.

Ken Foster

Father Geek note: This film has done well on the festival circut. It was a finialist for a Golden Lion at Venice and the President of the Italian Senate awarded it a Gold Medal this past year. It was released throughout Europe back in September. However to my knowledge it has only been seen in the USA at the Telluride Film Festival. Why this isn't in every Art House and campus Theater in the country I'll never understand. And man what a cool title... OUR LADY OF THE ASSASSINS, remember it! Now on to LOBO and his report for this week...

¿ Que patza CineLocos ?

LOBO here con mas cosas para LATIN-AICN, this time I really feel like doing most of my typing in Español, so if you aren't that fluent I will suggest to either get a Diccionario or someone who can help you translate. La razon why yo estoy doing this esta way is to see what mixing both languages looks like and especialmente just for fun, I specially don't like this since I hate the pinche Spanglish thing, and as you all know I don't write like this all the time, but esta vez I just felt like it. So tu have to deal with it and maybe get used to it because there might be a chance of me liking this too much. Entendido ? ...... !! Hold on !! , before you scroll down to check the stuff let me just say that I don't mean any disrespect to anybody, that I'm not doing this to be unfair with the readers that don't know the language and finally I am not "racist" ...so once again I want to point this out -->>> I AM DOING THIS JUST FOR FUN and to ad some SaborrrrrrR.....okay?? R WE KLïR ON DIS...??

QUICKIES / RAPIDINES

*** El Actor FEDERICO LUPPI from Argentina is about to start working in a pelicula with the nombre of "El Lugar donde estuvo el paraíso" , based on a novela by Carlos Franz (Chile) , the film counts con el Director Español GERARDO HERRERO and the Actress Paulina Gálvez. This film has 2½ million dollars in the Bank and is going to start rolling on January 29th in several locations de Perú.

*** Remember that starting this Thursday I am going to have news on "Vampires;Los Muertos" so be alert and check the column next Monday..

*** This is not a typical Quickie but I have to talk about this; There is a new version of the movie "El Bueno, El Malo y El Feo" on the works right now, this new version is going to be produced by Franco Nero (Die Hard 2) from Italy who also participate in several Spaghetti Westerns in the 70's. It seems that the cast might be formed by Mickey Rourke, Armand Assante and Murray Abraham. I don't know what to say to this besides that there is just one and only one version and that's the one with Clint Eastwood, that movie directed by Sergio Leone is one of my Top 10 movies of all time and I have to say that I've seen it more than ......I lost count maybe thousands of times and I still get into it, I enjoy it all the way and specially I love the ending with the classic Mexican stand-off, I mean that's just that, no way man, I can't even think how they got the idea on making another version...why not say that this film is just one more spaghetti western similar to it and give it the name of "Los tres Bandidos" or something like that....that's just how I think about this.

Note: some restrictions apply

BARRIO 13 Another Eastside story...

Parental Discretion : Not needed

Violent content : In the movie but not here

Adult language : Spanish ?

Nudity : find out by yourself

This is a movie that I recently saw and is nothing like "Blood in, Blood out" or those types of movies, this one is totally different, it shows another face of the Barrio, not the gangs and the Vatos Locos , this one is more about the people who decide to make a living out of the stereotypical way. The story takes place in a town of Aguascalientes, Mexico. where people go out to steal from others, they live in the streets, they sniff glue, drink and deal drugs, while others try to get some $$ Dinero by washing cars, picking up trash, standing on corners of streets and begging for a taco and stuff like that. This film reminded me and Sister Satan of the one from LUIS BUÑUEL "Los Olvidados" who also had the same kind of environment, but this one in particular besides being a recent film with all the new editing and stuff, it really called my attention once I saw the cover in a video store here in town. Once I picked it up I saw that the guy playing the main role is the same guy who played a corrupt Mexican officer in the movie "Gimme the power" (Todo el Poder) LUIS FELIPE TOVAR ( a Mexican version of Steve Buscemi ) so I decided to take it home and open it. At the beginning of the movie there is 3 small stories that are the heads of the chain (movie), one in which a guy gets robbed, beat up and even pissed on by some "Cholos" wanna be's, the other one is a scene where some fucking officers "the classic Mexican punks" (other words; stupid idiots) rape a girl about 15 years of age and are taking her to a dump and leaving her there with no clothes on and the final one is about a kid with the nickname of "Chompiras" who gets kicked-out of his house by his own Mother (Motherfuckin bitch) just because her Sancho (Lover/Camote) told her that she has to choose between him or the fuckin niño..so the kid gets it and to the streets goes. Later on the movie I see a familiar face playing a Crazy-demented-perverted guy who is running free around the streets looking for victims.

LUIS FELIPE TOVAR plays the role of a Father who lost his own Son (Hijo) after he chose to stay with some free meals and kicks from a Gal (Whore mother of three). Then after all of this you see what is the result of that kid named "Chompiras" and the girl who got raped..etc...They do drugs, they drink until their bodies turn into flasks of alcohol and it goes on and on and turns worse and worse.. This my friends is a movie with a message and it really teaches you lot, there are people out there that go through a lot of shit, people who don't have shit to eat and no place to stay, for those people it seems that there is no way they can get in a worse situation , but let me tell you, that is just a thought, cause they can fall into a deeper hole and then they lose their brains and sense of life or whatever you want to call that.

This guy LUIS FELIPE TOVAR plays his role damn good all the way and it is the first time I've seen him in a main role and he does it great. There is a couple of scenes by the end of the movie that none of us were expecting. I don't want to spoil it so I am going to put it this way " never cheat again and if you do wear armor", "eye for an eye" and "You will never see a stick the same way , once you see this film" also there is lot's of Sangre and shocking things that will either make you jump from your seat or go straight to vomit.... but it is all justified in my opinion.

This film has a lot of the street dialect used in the streets of Mexico, so be aware it is not just the common Español..there are phrases like "VAMOS A MATER EL OSO A PUÑALADAS" ( Let's stab the bear to death - in other words let's fuck) or "CHALE" , " VERDE Y NI SIQUIERA LA ROJA" ( No) and much more...So if you want to learn the Spanish Slang this is a good way to start. I really recommend this movie, it is already avaliable in video stores everywhere..so go check it out and get ready for some Ultra-violence with a gut rinching finale.

Note : the video cover has a big 13 but I will make sure to post some images next time.

Well CineLocos, that's all from me (LOBO) so see you all later, y Vaya Con Dios...
