Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. When I came out of my press screening of Wonder Woman the internet was abuzz with the news that King Kong Vs Godzilla found its director in Adam Wingard, per THR.
This marks a big jump for Wingard, who horror fans know as the director of A Horrible Way to Die, You're Next, The Guest and the recent Blair Witch remakequel. Now Legendary is putting him in charge of throwing Kong and Godzilla against each other.
This is Legendary's M.O. They give interesting indie directors a big step up with their big monsters. Gareth Edwards for Godzilla, Jordan Vogt-Roberts for Kong: Skull Island and Michael Dougherty for Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters. You can debate the results of this way of thinking all day, but I love that they're giving interesting voices their chance at telling this big, geeky stories.
Wingard has an interesting visual style. His Death Note is still coming up and I'm very curious to see how that looks, but he does seem to have a talent for setting the right visual tone for his movies. You're Next and The Guest jump immediately to mind as perfect examples of that.
So, good news here. I hope the movie works. We can be reasonably sure that Godzilla and Kong will end up teaming up against a common enemy at the end, but if they do go for a definitive winner then I'm pulling for the big ape to come out on top. Sorry, Mr. Atomic Breath.
