Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Matt Reeves' War for the Planet of the Apes looks flat out, no holds barred fucking incredible. He's killing it at all levels. Cinematography is gorgeous (shot in 65mm), the digital effects look to be a career best from Weta Digital and that's saying something since they're the best in the business and the performances (both live action and performance capture) are hitting emotional truth even in the marketing materials.
The sense of danger in this trailer is remarkable, the conflict between man and ape something that feels brutal and real. All in a movie about talking chimps. Unbelievable. Who would have called that Fox would produce some of the best summer tentpole franchise event films from mining their back catelogue? I've enjoyed every single one of the movies so far and it seems like they're getting better with each passing film, a rarity in a franchise.
I know we only have marketing materials to go on (plus about a 10 minute section of the movie I saw at CinemaCon), but this one promises to keep up that trend and is one of my most anticipated movies of the summer.
Here's the latest (and supposedly final) trailer. Enjoy:
Looks remarkable, eh? I can't get over how incredible the CG looks. I'm seeing the character, not an effect, when I see Caesar speak and that makes me so damn happy. Wonder if that clarity has to do with Reeves shooting 65, forcing the digital to hold up to a higher resolution? Whatever it is, it's amazing. I'm so ready for this one. What about you guys?
