Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I really, really, really dug The Disaster Artist at SXSW. I was actually surprised at how emotionally engaging it was. That was the last thing I expected from a making-of-The-Room movie.
It was announced just a few minutes ago that A24 and New Line are partnering to put The Disaster Artist in US theaters (Warner Bros is handling international). We're looking at a December 8th release nationally with some exclusive engagements December 1st.
That timing could mean they think James Franco could be up for some awards. I know a lot of my critic friends thought Franco's Tommy Wiseau was Oscar-worthy. I'm not so sure that's in the cards, but I'd love to see him get some recognition for taking what should have been a one-note imitation of one of the wackiest personalities to ever walk this earth and actually layer in a lot of humanity.
The Disaster Artist has a lot in common with Ed Wood and I think it'll be a very pleasant surprise for audience members this December... unless they fuck it up from the "work in progress" version that screened at SXSW.
