Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
Look!! Look!! Awards season!! We're neck deep in it now! This is an interesting time each year, as the various critic's groups all throw down, each of them pushing their favorites, trying to draw attention to what they see as the year's worthiest films. Messages are sent. There's rarely much agreement between the coasts. So far, LA and NY critics groups have rewarded very different movies, and now Boston weighs in with a list that's interesting, well-considered, and certainly continues to shore up the case for certain filsm as serious Oscar contenders. If you check the VARIETY story, you'll see a complete list of winners.
I notice in particular the award they gave Ellen Burstyn for REQUIEM FOR A DREAM. It's Best Actress. I don't know how I feel about that. I think she stands a great shot at taking an Oscar home if they push her as a Best Supporting Actress nominee. Where do you guys think the nomination (if it were to happen) belongs? How much screen time can you have before you become a lead? I'm sure many of you were happy to see ALMOST FAMOUS do so well, with Best Picture and Best Director nods as well as two others. There's a chance the film will be forgotten completely, so any attention like this seems to be a very good thing. CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON continues to make a strong showing, although I'd still say ghettoizing it as a foreign film nominee is underselling the film. It's good enough to complete for Best Picture, and I hope it's one of the Academy's final five this February. Next up is the Golden Globe nominations on Thursday morning. Until then...
"Moriarty" out.
