Hi, I read this in the French Film magazine.
The shooting of "Asterix and Obelix versus Caesar" started last January in the Bavaria Film GmbH studios in Germany. In the huge Studio 9, some spectacular scenes will take place like the one with Asterix and Obelix fighting against the gladiators in an ancient arena with 350 extras. Another scene shot in the Studio 3 shows Asterix kidnapped by the Romans and tortured with a weird machine with chains, knife-blades and cog-wheels.
In addition of special effects, there are 6 lions, 18 crocodiles, 2 elephants, 1 tiger, 1 panther (not pink), 80 snakes and 350 mygals. The shots on location will take place in Britain in France. In front of camera, there are Christian Clavier as Asterix, Gerard Depardieu as Obelix, Roberto Benigni as Detritus, Gottfried John as Caesar and Marianne Sägebrecht as Bonnemine. The shooting will last 6 months for a budget of 40-42 M$. The release is scheduled to the spring 1999. Uderzo, the cartoonist of "Asterix and Obelix" takes part in the project and he said the film will respect the comics, which is good for all those who loved this pair all over the world !
