This Week's SATURDAY SHORTS: Scary Old Men, Blind Jedi, Incredible Discoveries, and Monsters!

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Muldoon here with this week's selection of short films that kick massive amounts of ass, quality projects from around the globe sent in by the filmmakers themselves. I never really have a clue what to expect each time I log in to my AICN email, a lot of times it's spam, Kickstarter asks, or PR companies pushing less than desirable films my way. In that mix however are little gems of greatness, little surprises with links to films that some stranger out there busted their ass to bring to life. In truth, the Saturday Shorts submissions are the primary reason I check my email and I love how simple the process is... "just shoot me a link to your film." That's it. No steps beyond that, no shady "entry fees." This column exists for two reasons, one is to simply present badass films to folks interested in seeing something new in the comfort of their home, however many miles that house might be from the nearest film fest. The other is to provide a place for filmmakers to show off their stuff, and while there are tons of sites out there (more each day), there's a certain type of person who clicks over to AICN - film lovers, and not the type to swirl a glass of wine while pretending to be interested in something, but genuine men and women who simply enjoy cool things. Alright, my tangent's just about run its course - my point is, there's an insane amount of talent out there and in the films below, so hopefully you find something below that speaks to you or perhaps something that smacks you in the butt with the vibe of "Perhaps I should go make a film." Audience and filmmakers alike, have fun (it's Saturday damnit)!

Go grab yourself some popcorn, lock your kids in a closet, kill the lights, relax and check out this little weekly film fest we've got ourselves here:

CHOMPER

Alyssa Radmand and Pigrat Productions have our first film of the week, a creepy tale of a predator watching his prey. "A Mother and Daughter are stalked by an Old Man who desperately wants something from them in this horror spin on a classic piece of children's folklore." It features gorgeous images and feels to be just the correct run time, where upon seeing the credits you feel like you just ate a meal of a story. Solid work from Radmand and co. If you want to see more of Radmand's work, then click over to the Pigrat Productions website!

HOSHINO

TRT: 7:02

Next up is a fan film set in the STAR WARS universe. Director Stephen Vitale's film is something else, as in on another level of "fan film." This is the type of fan film that's so incredibly well done... I hope Vitale's door is in the process of getting knocked down by the Disney/Lucasfilm folks for a job. "The tale of blind Jedi Master Ko Hoshino and her journey to become one with the force." Vitale has a pretty cool "making of" video if you're interested in how he pulled this one off. Be sure to check out the film's Facebook Page for more info!

BONIATO

TRT: 22:13

Eric Mainade, Adres Meza-Valdes, and Diego Meza-Valdes have our next film, with a story I'm not sure I've seen told before. It's a massive gut punch of a film that will stick with you. "An illegal migrant worker decides it’s time to move on from picking crops and find a better job. Little does she know, insidious supernatural forces have a different plan for her. Some borders aren't meant to be crossed." (Thanks Chris!)

Filmmaker David Lea has our next film, a project five years in the making. "A man and his dog make their routine walk to the isolated clifftops of Cornwall...but this time they realise they're not so isolated after all." Another wildly well done short that leaves you wanting more. Great locations with great designs, this film has made David Lea a filmmaker to watch out for - I truly do want to see what he's going coming up next. Check out David's Vimeo Page as well as his website for more info on the man!

DARKNESS OF NIGHT

TRT: 13:30

To wrap us out we've got a film from Vincent Cortez, a "drama/fantasy/horror" film that's damn well done. A young boy is forced to deal with something monsterous. Check out Vincent's Mitchell Street Pictures website or follow them on Twitter (@mitchellstpics) for more of his films!

BAM! That's it for this week, ladies and gentlemen. I hope you had fun - I know I did. So much fun in fact that I think I'll be back next week with yet another handful of interesting films to share with folks out there simply looking for something new and cool. If you have a short and think it belongs here or are on the fence about whether to send it in, please do send it in - I'd love to see what you've put together. I've already seen hundreds of fresh new filmmakers' shorts and like any good addict, I need more!

Shoot me an email at "Mike@aintitcool.com"

In the subject line include:

“SHORTS” + “Your film’s name” + “The film’s genre”

Then, in the body of the email, please include a synopsis of the film and any contact information you might think I need or would want published. The more info you send my way, the more info there is to put with your short.

Please don’t feel the need to submit multiple times.

Remember, the filmmakers might still be in the audience, so feel free to share your thoughts in Talkbacks below. (JUST DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE). I picked them, so you know I think highly of all of these, but how about you fine folks? How'd you like 'em?

BY THE WAY: If you've had a short featured here, that means that I personally am a fan of your work, so feel free to shoot me any kind of news on new projects/films/whatever. I can't say I'll be able to help or in what capacity, but I'm interested in your work and am always down to see more! (Keep making cool stuff, everyone!)
