Hey folks, Harry here.... I haven't read the novel, so I instantly hopped over to AMAZON.Com to read up on this... and damn, sounds like a great novel and story to transform... here's the plot SKIP IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW....
In a world with no poverty, no crime, no sickness and no unemployment, and where every family is happy, 12-year-old Jonas is chosen to be the community's Receiver of Memories. Under the tutelage of the Elders and an old man known as the Giver, he discovers the disturbing truth about his utopian world and struggles against the weight of its hypocrisy. With echoes of Brave New World, in this 1994 Newbery Medal winner, Lowry examines the idea that people might freely choose to give up their humanity in order to create a more stable society. . - "To buy the book and read more... Ok... now that we know about the book a bit, here's the spy report from THE EVIL ONE
Harry,
I've worked at Universal Pictures, and I have a little bit of info for you. I'm not sure you know this or not, but (I overheard) a live-action film adaption is being made based on the sci-fi young adult novel, The Giver. I couldn't catch much except that the guy who did Elizabeth, Shekhar Kapur (I checked the spelling on the net) is in final talks to sign on. And last I heard that they were looking to get someone like the kid in the 6th Sense. (I'm not sure if they actually meant Haley Joel Osment, or if they just meant a good child star.)
You should also know, I haven't read the book but my wife (who is a sixth grade teacher) told me it was, "Kinda like A BRAVE NEW WORLD for teenagers."
