Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Disney has officially announced their young lead in Ava DuVernay's big adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's A WRINKLE IN TIME. Young Storm Reid will be playing Meg Murry opposite Oprah Winfrey's Mrs. Which, Reese Witherspoon's Mrs. Whatsit and Mindy Kaling's Mrs. Who.
This wasn't a book I read in school, but I know it is beloved by pretty much every generation of children since it was published in 1963. A quick glance at a plot summary and it's quickly evident why. This thing goes bonkers, sending children across the universe in search of their father as a giant evil builds to take over all life everywhere.
DuVarney helming this thing is pretty fascinating, I have to admit. To me this is what I hope for when the progressives among us were demanding more female and people of color directors. That call seemed focused just on movies about women or POC (Black Panther, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, etc), but to me what I want is more along the lines of what's happening here. DuVarney's a talented director building a hugely diverse cast around something that is just a good story, not a good "black" story or a good "female" story.
If they pull this film off it could be a game changer for the kinds of movies we get in the future.
What do you folks think?
