Hey folks, Harry here... Quint is in Toronto chasing sewer clowns apparently - and I'm not entirely sure he'll make his deadline for today, so I figured... I'm not gonna do a Pic of the day... that'd just be replacing Quint's idea with Quint's idea... And the other day on that ILM FX Reel for THE FORCE AWAKENS, I told you about how YouTube has a metric ton of cool Behind the Scenes and Making ofs in their system over there. I honestly have no idea how many they have, but I decided... being the Douglas Trumbull geek that I am, that I'd give you this very awesome 1972 Making of SILENT RUNNING. Why SILENT RUNNING? Because it's a great hard science fiction film, in the spirit of PASSENGERS (though not overtly your typibal romantic film, though Bruce Dern loves the nature preserved in them Biospheres more than probably anyone has loved anything)
Being raised by Hippy Geeks, SILENT RUNNING was in 16mm film in my house beginning around 1975, we watched it alot. Mom loved Joan Baez... But me, I was all about Huey, Dewey & Louie. Those bots captured my imagination. This doc, I saw at a convention at some point in the seventies and the revelation of how they did those robots... blew my mind and taught me that Douglas Trumbull must be... "One Of Us!"
Here ya go:
There ya go, 45 minutes... Enjoy..
Keep it cool,
Harry
