Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Those of us lucky enough to live in movie cities (LA, New York, Chicago, Austin, or anywhere with an Alamo Drafthouse) can pretty much count on seeing classics on the big screen whenever we want to, but that's not the case everywhere in the US.
So, I get excited when I see a nationwide trend for screening classics. It brings a little moisture to my geeky eyes that theater chains want to celebrate the work of the late, great Gene Wilder. Chains across the country have booked screenings of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Blazing Saddles, AMC actually screening them both back to back on 55 screens.
You can count on art houses and indie chains to showcase Wilder's less famous films (the Drafthouse is doing a charity screening of The Producers, for instance), but any time the main chains highlight classic films it's always good news.
Most of these Wonka and Blazing Saddles screenings are happening this weekend, so check your local listings and see if you can go celebrate the life and work of Gene Wilder this Labor Day weekend!
