Well, here's a look at WIDE AWAKE, a new film with Rosie O'Donnell, a fave of Robogeek's. Once again this is the opinion of an individual, so take it as such. If you saw the film and agreed, disagreed, or had an opinion that defies classification, let me know. Until we hear more, this is what I've heard...
Today, I saw a sneak preview of the new movie "Wide Awake" Starring Rosie O'Donnell, Denis Leary, Dana Delany, and Joseph Cross. Here's my review.......
Hi, I'm a new "informer" for Harry's Ain't it cool news web page. I've been trying to think of a cool name for myself, but I haven't come up with anything to good. Just call be Calvin. Today, I saw a sneak preview of Alliance's new release "Wide Awake" starring Rosie O'Donnel, Denis Leary, Dana Delany, and newcomer Joseph Cross. Don't let the title fool you. Chances are you won't stay "Wide Awake" during this movie. It was quite dull. And don't let the marquee fool you. The big name stars billed over the title (Ie. Rosie, Leary, and Delany) play small roles in the movie. The story revolves around newcomer Joseph Cross, who plays 10 year old Joshua Beal. Delany and Leary play Joshua's parents, who are extremely busy due to the fact that they are both doctors. Rosie plays one of the nuns, who teaches Joshua english.
The entire movie revolves around Joshua's quest to talk to God. His reason for wanting to talk to God is that he wants to make sure that his dead Grandfather is doing alright. Joshua was extremely close to his grandfather, the audience is shown this through flashbacks to Joshua playing with his grandfather. Throughout the movie, Joshua attempts to talk to God via different methods. He attempts to talk to a Cardinal, the Pope, he tries different faiths (Judiasm, Hinduism etc...) and of course prays. We also see Joshua interact with his best friend, a school bully, and of course the cliche "girlfriend". Naturally, the end of the movie is extremely touching, with a nice lesson that can be learned - would we expect anything less from a movie that has the "Queen of Nice" Rosie O'Donnell with it!
In all honesty, the movie wasn't that bad. A lot of the kids in the theatre seemed to enjoy it. The only problems with the movie was that the plot is so unrealistic. An entire hour and a half movie is based on a ten year old boy wanting to talk to GOD!!! On the plus side, the ten year old boy did an extremely good job of acting, as did Rosie. Every parent in that theatre looked like they wanted to adopt him. Another problem with the movie is that the children in the movie talked to eachother on an adult level. What ten year olds do you know who have philosophical discussions about GOD???
I personally wouldn't recommend the movie. Only consider it if a quality children's movie like "Anastasia" (Which is now back in theatres for some reason (In Toronto that is!!!)) is sold out!
