Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Our friends at Birth.Movies.Death have a great scoop on a John Turturro project called Going Places, which is a remake of a French sex farce, but also happens to be a Big Lebowski spin-off.
Apparently, Turturro wrote the adaptation and plopped in Jesus Quintana as the lead character. He'll be joined by Bobby Cannavale, Audrey Tautou and Susan Sarandon.
I haven't seen the original French film (released in 1974), but IMDb has the following synopsis, written by a 'jhailey':
Two whimsical, aimless thugs harass and assault women, steal, murder, and alternately charm, fight, or sprint their way out of trouble. They take whatever the bourgeois characters value: whether it's cars, peace of mind, or daughters. Marie-Ange, a jaded, passive hairdresser, joins them as lover, cook, and mother confessor. She's on her own search for seemingly unattainable sexual pleasure.
Now picture Turturro back in his purple jumpsuit playing one of the two "thugs" in that madcap adventure.
BMD swears up and down this is legit and while the Coens aren't involved creatively this is for sure a continuation of Big Lebowski. Don't think of it as a sequel, more of a Maude to Lebowski's All In The Family or the Fraiser to Lebowski's Cheers. Meaning, don't expect to see Jeff Bridges cameo.
I'll admit, it's a weird choice, made even weirder since the production is filming without a distributor. You'd think there'd be some rights issues that'd need to be worked out, but considering how close Turturro seems to be with the Coens I imagine all that was done before they rolled film/tape/pixels.
It's a curious move, but one that I'm intrigued by. What do you folks think?
