Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. When word leaked out that Legendary was going hard for the Pokemon live action film rights I wrote a big piece saying how they were about to be able to print money.
Today it was revealed that the license they actually got was for a recent Japanese game called Great Detective Pikachu, which isn't about gathering and fighting Pokemon, but rather about a smart, talking Pikachu who can't really fight, but uses his intelligence to solve crimes.
I'm no Pokemon expert, but I think it's safe to say making the first live action Pokemon movie being a boy and his pet detective thing story is a bit of a headscratcher. I don't think this is the movie the people who have grown up playing the card game, watching the animated series and playing all the video games want. This feels more like a spin-off that they'd do after their big adventure-focused franchise is well underway.
The press release sent by Legendary made sure to let reporters know that this is only the first step into the vast Pokemon universe. I wonder what the story we don't hear is. There's got to be some kind of rights issue keeping a straight up Pokemon adaptation from going, right?
What do you folks think?
