Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I've been a fan of J.A. Bayona's work since The Orphanage. It's been interesting watching him progress through the studio system. The Impossible is still a movie I think about. His great talent is building full, believable worlds, whether it's a haunted orphanage or a Tsunami-wrecked Thailand, so it's not surprising to see his newest film appears to be an intricately created fantasy world.
A Monster Calls looks like it's skirting some Pan's Labyrinth territory and that's a good thing. Fitting, even, since Guillermo del Toro produced Orphanage and that one very much has an early del Toro/Devil's Backbone vibe.
The cast on this one is incredible, with Felicity Jones, Toby Kebbell, Sigourney Weaver, Geraldine Chaplin and Liam Neeson voicing the big tree monster. The kid looks pretty good in the trailer, too. Last time Bayona cast a youg actor in a movie he went on to become Spider-Man, so he's got the touch.
Now, you're going to get Liam introducing this trailer to you and they do that annoying thing where they do a quick tease of the trailer before they play the trailer, ruining all the big moments right before you watch the actual trailer. Ignore that part, enjoy the drama/fantasy world teased here:
This is definitely my kind of movie. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out!
